How About Some Fothergilla!
Shines in Spring and Fall
Fothergilla
Fothergilla major 'Mt. Airy' in full bloom
This is a great shrub with multi-season interest  - Fothergilla major 'Mt. Airy'. Commonly known as Large Fothergilla - this cultivar is one of the more compact of this species growing 5-6' high with an upright habit. In May you'll find greenish-white bottle-brush flowers on the tips of each branch. They'll start flowering before they leaf out and continue as the new foliage emerges, sometimes lasting 3-4 weeks. The blue-green leaves turn a beautiful mix of orange, yellow and red in the fall. Though the color may vary year to year depending on weather conditions, it is always a good show. The species can have a suckering habit but that is less common with this Mt Airy cultivar.

Fothergilla gardenii (Dwarf Fothergilla) is a more compact shrub growing 3-5' high with the same upright habit, interesting flowers and great fall color. It's actually hard to tell these two apart - that's where the tags come in handy!

Plant in full sun to part shade in almost any garden - the shrub border, perennial or woodland garden, in massed plantings or along a foundation.

Check them out while they're blooming - PC Grown!

The sales yard is packed with beautiful material coming up from our container yard, down from our farms and in from our vendors plus our own perennials of course - Stop by and see for yourselves!

Meadow Sage (a.k.a. Whorled Sage)
Salvia verticillata

Salvia 'Purple Rain'
Purple Rain Salvia

The perennials are looking awesome right now including the Purple Rain Salvia which are just beginning to bloom. A larger growing Salvia that has gray-green fuzzy foliage and violet-purple flower spikes that bloom above the leaves. Its sprawling, mounding habit and 20" height make it useful even along the front of the border or along hardscape. The coarser texture pairs nicely with other perennials and grasses. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun. Deer resistant, too!

Plants to Know
Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliantisima'

Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliantissima'
Red Chokeberry

Here's a great native plant with a lot to offer that's also in bloom right now - Red Chokeberry. Clusters of white flowers with yellow centers mid-May develop into bright red fruit that ripen in September. As they are not a favorite for birds to eat they persist for weeks! The leaves are a very glossy green that turn brilliant red in fall rivaling Burning Bush. A native plant that's at home in the shrub border, massed for a showy fall display or simply alongside a stream.
