Blooming now!
Deadnettle |
Lamium maculatum is a nice shade perennial groundcover that is a champ of a bloomer! Spring is its early show but you'll find sporadic bloom almost all season - even into Fall! Great for under shrubs, along the front of the perennial border and in containers as the 'spillers'! Part shade to shade is what it needs with moist soils. Variegated foliage and deer resistance to boot! |

Autumn Cherry Prunus subhirtella 'Autumnalis'
Blooms great in spring and again in fall. | |

 |
Last year Deutzia gracilis 'Nikko' was beautiful! This year's crop will be blooming in a few weeks! |
Cover Some Ground With...
Deutzia gracilis, 'Nikko' - When you think of Deutzia, what should come to mind is ground cover! Deutzia g. 'Nikko' is a very low maintenance and disease-free ground hugging shrub. While only growing to 2' tall, it can grow and spread to a width of 4'. It's not very often that you come across such a hardy, woody groundcover that has impeccable ornamental value. With its profuse white flowers in late spring and rich purple fall color it's hard to grow them fast enough to fill our customer's demand! So when looking for a groundcover, look a little farther and you'll find Deutzia g. 'Nikko' ....your customers will thank you! |
Mark's Turf Tip: Controlling Weeds in New Spring Seedings
 |
Pre-emergents with and without fertilizer that can be applied this time of year. |
We all know the best time to start new grass seed is in the fall, but your customers expect you to repair things like snowplow damage at the least or plant a new lawn regardless of the time of year! This is however, a challenging time for controlling weeds but there are options.
First, there is Lebanon's 12-24-11 with Tupersan. This product can be applied at the time of seeding thus making it an ideal product if there will not be any follow up work. However at the time of seeding it is applied at half rate (one bag per 10,000sq ft) and for best control should be applied again one month later. This will stop crabgrass and some other annual weed seed from germinating.
The next product in my opinion is the best if you can do follow up applications to a new seeding. It is Lebanon's 19-0-6 with Confront plus Dimension. This product will control Broad Leaf Weeds like dandelions and clover as well as crabgrass. The key to this product is that according to the label it can be applied two weeks after germination of the new grass seed. THIS IS HUGE!
Stop by and talk to your salesperson with any questions - as always, follow the directions on the label. |
In the Greenhouse
Lavendula angustifolia 'Hidcote'
 |
Lavender angustifolia 'Hidcote' |
Lavender is a perennial we sells lots of, hence the hundreds we have in our greenhouse for the future! It must be the combination of the aromatic gray foliage, lavender flowers and deer resistance that puts it on the go-to list for designers, landscapers and homeowners alike! 'Hidcote' is a mounded compact plant with deep, purple-blue flowers. Plant in full sun in well-drained, dry, sandy soil. Prune back in spring. Haven't tried them yet? What are you waiting for?
Check out our other varieties, too - 'Munstead', 'Provence', 'Phenomenal' and 'Mini Blue'! |
Plants to Know - Azalea 'Pink & Sweet'
 | Hard to resist the beautiful bloom of the Swamp Azalea 'Pink and Sweet'. This season's crop will be blooming soon - get them in the ground for your customers to enjoy! |
Picking out Azaleas is not easy. Sometimes we stick with what we know like the tried and true 'Mother's Day' or 'Delaware Valley White'. Or we venture into the vast array of pinks like 'Blaauw's Pink' or 'Lorna' - but please don't forget about the deciduous Azaleas! Tucked behind evergeen foundation plants you 're extending the wave of Azalea bloom further into the season - even in through June! Take this one - Azalea viscosum 'Pink and Sweet'. Three features about this plant call our attention - Fragrance - Flowers - Fall Color! Growing 4-6' H, tolerant of moist soil and even salt tolerant! And best of all it's another great Native plant grown here at Planter's Choice.
