Cornelian Cherry
The Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas) are in bloom right now. The small tree/large shrub is an interesting addition to the border lighting up the landscape in spring and providing cherry red fruit in July. Birds love them and they are sometimes used in jams and preserves.

Earth Day - Plant some Natives!

Eastern Redbuds
Cercis canadensis 'Alba' on left and species on right

There's nothing more fitting for Earth Day (April 22nd) than to plant some beautiful native plants.  They're the best choice for our landscape, providing food for wildlife, promoting biodiversity and needing less maintenance in terms of less fertilizers and chemicals!

We grow a full line of native plants spanning trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses and ferns. Pick up one of our Native Solutions Brochures the next time you stop by for the full list and helpful planting information!

Right now there are plenty of spring bloomers both in bud and blooming including these:

Amelanchier canadensis (Serviceberry), Cercis canadensis (Eastern Redbud), Cornus florida (Flowering Dogwood), Lindera benzoin (Spicebush), Phlox divaricata (Woodland Phlox), Aquilegia canadensis (Red Columbine)

So this week, plant some native plants, and next week...and the week after that, too - let's do something good for our planet!

New Check-in Procedure in Newtown

New Check-In Hut
Tommy - the self-proclaimed Hut Master

If you've visited our Newtown Sales Yard lately you might have noticed the newly built Check-in Hut located on the 'Main Road' as you drive in. You'll meet Tommy and Tim who will be manning the check-ins during the day. They'll be there to send you out into the sales yard saving you the step of heading into the office!

So, as you pull up to the Check-in Hut, you will be handed a clipboard with sales tickets.  Once you receive this clipboard you will be staged down the main road of the nursery close to the perennials section.  This is where the next available Sale Rep will greet and assist you with all the required materials you will need.

We hope you will find that the new process decreases your time spent in the yard so that you can spend more time at your jobs and tending to your customers needs helping your business grow!

Plants to Know
Pieris x 'Spring Snow'

Spring Snow Andromeda

Spring Snow Andromeda blooms the same time as

Pink Dawn Viburnum - not a bad combination!

Andromedas are true work horses in the landscape when it comes to shrubs, especially this time of year. The shiny evergreen leaves showcase the fragrant white flowers on this more compact Andromeda. Growing 3'H x 4'W they're the perfect solution to fronting upright shrubs such as deciduous Azaleas providing the warmth of evergreens during the winter along with deer resistance.  Chuck says the added plus with this hybrid Andromeda is that you won't have to dead-head them - the flowers just fade away! Plant in partial shade in moist, very well-drained soil. The best part is they're locally grown right here in Newtown!

Perennials are Looking Great!

Both yards currently have a great selection of beautiful perennials just waking up looking spring fresh - like these Sedum! Take a look at them all. In Newtown say hello to Ana - she'll be there to help you find what you need and give you some great suggestions to wow your customers!
