Oregon Grape Holly
Oregon Grape Holly
Mahonia aquifolium
These evergreen shrubs are an interesting choice for shady areas. Needs moist, well-drained acidic soil protected from dessicating wind. These bright yellow flowers develop into purple grape-like fruit in fall that persist into December. Check out our #5 containers and give them a try! Would make a cool hedge!

Korean Reed Grass
Korean Reed Grass

We are working daily at uncovering all our houses  - we have about 20% more to go! But, this time of year the plants in the covered houses have received the benefit of solar energy giving them a jumpstart on the season! Just like the beautiful Korean Reed Grass (Calamagrostis brachytricha). It will have rose-purple seed heads emerging late August early September and are a clump forming grass native to Korea usually found in moist areas along the edge of woodlands. However, if grown in full sun they have a more upright habit with an abundance of inflorescences. 3-4' tall, Zone 4.

New to this ornamental grass? Give it a try - put some movement in your landscape!

Winter Was Here!

The writing on the wall says you will see winter damage!

RX for stressed Plants
BioPak Plus
Now that all the snow and ice has melted away and we see signs of life in the form of swelling buds and emerging fronds you will most likely see winter damage in some form or another. We had the coldest winter in 20 years and record snowfall in the Northeast so signs of stress on plant material is inevitable.

What are the signs to watch for? Besides the obvious bent and snapped branches from excessive snow loads, you may see bronzing on conifers, leaf scorch on broadleaf  evergreens, salt damage from de-icing, blackening on leaves from frozen tissue, frost cracks on bark, branch dieback from sunscald - to name some of the most common problems. Some of these may not be visible right away but show up later in the season.

Some can be remedied by judicious trimming of broken branches, using a microbial innoculant plus fertilizer for stressed plants such as BioPak Plus (water-soluble) and pruning out areas affected by winter burn when appropriate. This more  detailed information is very helpful as it has prevention tips for going into the colder months.

As always, contact us with any questions - we're here all year long!

Tools. It's What's for Planting.

Besides all our plant material we have a great line of hardgoods - including all you'll need for planting a tree:
  • Tarps  (for protecting your load when leaving the nursery)
  • Ball carts (better than hauling it by hand - 3 sizes, 3 colors!)
  • Shovels (more than 7 digging shovels to choose from plus digging bars!)
  • Soil Amendments (Cow Manure, Top Soil, Peat Moss, Espoma Green Sand)
  • Planting fertilizers (Roots, M-Roots, PHC Healthy Start, Roots Tree Saver, Espoma Plant-tone)
  • Water absorbing crystals (Aqua-tain keeps moisture near roots)
  • Rakes (iron rakes, spring rakes and others)
  • Bagged mulch (Pine, Cedar, Mini-nuggets, Nuggets)
  • Tree watering bags (for single stem trees and evergreens)
  • Stakes (Duckbill kits in three sizes plus oak stakes in 6' and 8' and Guy Wire)
