Need hedging material - How about some California Privet or Lynwood Gold Forsythia! FYI - B&B Privet will be in short supply this year...plan ahead! |
|
|
Trails on the ground got you wondering?
Most likely - it's voles!
|
This trail leads right to some low growing Juniper |
Trails like these are easily spotted once the snow cover has melted and if you don't already know, it's a sure sign that voles have been hard at work eating tender roots, bark and other vegetation including some bulbs. Any type of cover like leaves and snow allow these small rodents to go unnoticed until you find obvious signs of damage like girdled trunks and severed root systems.
So what's the best way to deal with these pests? Proper sanitation including cleaning away leaf litter and grass clippings is the best preventative but you may also want to use some bait like Repellex Mole and Vole Control if you notice an increase in activity.
So, pain in the neck? Yes! Controllable, absolutely! Read Cornell's article it's full of detailed information!

Perennial Production
Watertown's Yard is Growing!
 |
The beginning of the new production area in Watertown. |
The production area in Watertown has plans to move across to the other side of the pond. The guys have cleared roughly 4 acres which will become the new production area plus act as the growing/holding area until the plants are ready to be moved over to the sales yard or shipped down to Newtown.
The clearing and grading is done, now it's time for gravel, lots and lots of gravel!
Once production is moved a much-needed larger space will be created for the sales yard! Woohoo! Though it won't be ready next week, it is cool to watch the progress! |
Container Production
Red Twig Dogwood
|
Red Twig Dogwoods heading over to Meadowbrook |
Peter's crew has been busy the last few weeks potting up bareroot material like these Red Twig Dogwood (Cornus sericea 'Baileyi'). They were just potted into 6 gallon containers and will be ready for sale this fall - just in time to plant for winter interest! Of course we do have a ready supply in 3 and 6 gallon containers right now.
This hardy native is obviously great for winter interest but they also are a good choice for wet areas and rain gardens. They make an awesome impact when planted in large groups.
Look for other shrub dogwood like Silky Dogwood (C. amomum) and Yellow Twig 'Bud's Yellow' and 'Ivory Halo' both ready in June (C. alba). |
NOW! Check out the lesser known Dove Tree, Persian Ironwood and Franklinia! Also the specialty evergreens are beginning to come in!
