Tricky Timing
Spring pruning refresher

Despite the snow and cold that winter brought us, it's time for spring cleanups! Along with that come lots of questions about pruning.

Pruning Weigela
The right time to prune Weigela is right after they bloom.

The following is not a comprehensive list, but some of the commonly found shrubs that flower on new growth and can be trimmed in early spring without impacting flower display (but it might push the flower time to later in the season):

Buddleia (Butterfly Bush)

Caryopteris (Blue Mist Shrub)

Clethra (Summersweet)

Cotinus (Smoke Bush)

Hibiscus (Rose of Sharon)

Itea (Sweetspire)

Kolkwitzia (Beauty Bush)

Hypericum (St. Johnswort)

Potentilla (Cinquefoil)

Rosa (Rose)

The following plants will not flower this year if they are trimmed past their flower buds now:

Azalea

Chaenomeles (Quince)

Enkianthus

Forsythia

Fothergilla (Witchalder)

H. macrophylla (MOST Bigleaf Hydrangea)

Kalmia latifolia (Mt. Laurel)

Pieris (Andromeda)

Rhododendron

Syringa (MOST Lilac)

Viburnum (Other than Summer Snowflake)

Weigela

The following plants should be noted because they have fall fruit that won't set if the plants are trimmed past the flowers:

Callicarpa (Beautyberry)

Ilex sp. (Holly)

Aronia (Chokeberry)

Sarcococca (Sweetbox)

Skimmia

Symphoricarpos (Coral/Snowberry)

Keep in mind that these lists do not account for the best time to trim for other aesthetic reasons. For example, Mountain Laurel is best heavily trimmed in early spring if branching at the base is desired, but that would remove many, if not all of the flower buds.

It's officially here!

Happy Spring!

Plants to Know

Syringa x prestoniae 'Donald Wyman'

4/5' Donald Wyman Hybrid Lilac - they'll make a beautiful statement later this spring!
When homeowners think of Lilacs most often they're picturing the old-fashioned Common Lilac (Syringa vulgaris). It's a great shrub but prone to powdery mildew and it can be an unreliable bloomer from year to year.
This week we've received in some interesting hybrids. The Donald Wyman Lilacs seen here are the result of a cross between S. villosa and S. komarowii subsp. reflexa which were bred by Isabella Preston in Ottawa in the 1920s. They've graced many landscapes for nearly 100 years - so it's worth finding out more about them:
  • Multi-stemmed, upright shrubs with a rounded head growing 10'H x 8'W.
  • Large panicles of pinkish-purple flowers (4"x6") late spring have a light lilac scent and are very reliable bloomers
  • Prune after flowering, it helps keep it full at the base
  • Resistant to powdery mildew
  • Non-suckering, upright habit lends itself to underplanting of bulbs and groundcover
  • Extremely hardy, Zones 3-7
  • Plant in full sun in well-drained soil
  • Attracts butterflies
Consider these for a fragrant hedge, as a stand alone accent plant or in the shrub border. James Macfarlane is another of the Prestonian Lilacs - a vigorous grower with bright pink blooms.
