Everyone Ready for Spring Flowering Trees?

Because here they come!

Freshly landed Ornamental Plums
Despite the freezing cold temperatures we saw earlier this week, SPRING ...IS...COMING! So are the trucks! We've received close to a thousand trees so far and that's only the beginning.  The guys have been busy unloading, lining them out and mulching them in. Deciduous trees are always the first to come arriving in tight bud giving you sufficient time to offer your customers the much needed spring color they'll be craving!

So what has arrived you ask? You can scroll down to see the specifics but here is a quick list of what's come in so far: Serviceberry, Redbud, Dogwood, Magnolias, Cherries, Flowering Pears, Ornamental Plums, Pin Oaks and Tree Lilacs.

Some of the highlights from this week are the following:

Sweetbay Magnolias (Magnolia virginiana) Sought after for their lustrous dark green leaves, graceful habit and sweet fragrance. The biggest plus is - they're native! You'll find them growing along streams and wetlands from Massachusetts to Florida and west to Texas! Plant in moist to wet soil in partial shade, and in the northern range protect from wind. Sweetbay Magnolia make a great small specimen or patio tree growing to about 18' high. An evergreen in the south, up north here they are semi-evergreen to deciduous.

China Snow Tree Lilac (Syringa reticulata var. pekinensis) this is a very useful tree for smaller residential landscapes, flowering screens, single specimen or even as a corner anchor to a residential foundation. Here's why: It will grow to about 20' with an upright spreading habit, has cream-white flowers in June (earlier than S. reticulata) and some outstanding deep amber-red exfoliating bark making it a fantastic choice for the winter garden.

Though your phone may not be ringing off the hook just yet, it will be soon! Stop in and take a look at what has landed so far and get geared up for SPRING - we can't wait to see you!

A New Face in the Greenhouse

...and another plant geek!
Dan Demers
Dan loves what he does!

My name is Dan Demers, and I am new to the Planters' Choice team. I am leading the Propagation Department. I have over 10 years of experience in propagation, mostly with woody ornamentals and I am a self-proclaimed plant geek! My favorite plants are Oxydendrum arboreum (Sourwood), Chionanthus virginicus (White Fringetree) and Viburnum 'Pragense' (Prague Viburnum).

Right now in the greenhouses we are sticking herbaceous perennial cuttings for the next growing season. Some varieties we are working on are Salvia, Delosperma, Monarda, and Gaura. We are also doing some seeding, mostly on Rudbeckia and Echinacea.

Cuttings are when we take a clipping off a plant, treat it in a rooting hormone, stick the cutting in a propagation media, and place that flat under a mist system. We mist the plant cuttings based on the environmental conditions and plant type. The mist is generally more frequent when the cutting is first stuck, then slowly over time, it is reduced as the cutting roots and is able to take up water by itself through the newly produced root system. Interesting to know, the water is not used to water the soil, it is used more to cool the foliage and stop the plant from desiccating and wilting.

That's it for now - stop in soon and take a peak!
