Mark had a good time bringing down some seasonal container material to the New York Botanical Garden this week and couldn't resist taking this pic. Their Weeping Katsura is a stately tree that has been used in countless arboreta, university campuses, cemeteries and parks world wide. Growing about 20' tall and 25'+ wide this weeper makes an impact anytime of year. Because of their wide habit it's important to site them with room to spread. In fall the delicate heart-shaped leaves turn to golds, oranges and reds emitting a cotton candy fragrance into the air.
The species Japanese Katsura has a pyramidal habit while young becoming more upright as it matures growing 40-60'H and 20-30'W. It's a great tree for both commercial or residential properties and is one of Michael Dirr's favorites. Plant in full sun for best fall color in a site with even moisture.
The name Cercidiphyllum means 'leaves like a Cercis' (Redbud) - the same rounded heart-shape but with a toothed edge instead of smooth. Though native to Japan and China a form of Cercidiphyllum existed in North American prior to the end of the Ice Age 10,000 years ago.

Think combinations when doing your fall planting.  Spirea japonica 'Shirobana' flowers both pink and white on the same plant, Itea virginica (Virginia Sweetspire) has fragrant summer flowers and awesome fall color and Azalea 'Delaware Valley White' has, of course, white flowers on an evergreen shrub.
