Clean nozzels will save you time and money

As deer spraying season gets into full swing, the usual problems arise with application equipment. Most all deer sprays have some kind of sticking agent in them, usually a latex material, that once it's dry it is very difficult to remove - especially from your spray equipment. Even travel time between jobs can often allow the sticker left in small nozzles and valves to dry enough to become clogged and inoperable. Here are some good tips to keep them in shape:

1. Carry some hot water in a thermos or jug. If the nozzles haven't dried completely, hot water is enough to get them clear.

2. At the end of the day run some hot water through the sprayer and rinse out the nozzles and valves.

3. Pick up some pink, non-toxic RV antifreeze in gallon jugs at a hardware store and pump it through valves, nozzles and pumps, especially if you are finished for the season. This is inexpensive, prevents freezing and also lubricates o-rings and washers preventing them from becoming hard and dry which could cause leaking in the spring. It is the best insurance you can buy for a sprayer!

4. Most latex based stickers can be removed from nozzles and valves with a solvent like GOOF-OFF for removing latex paints.

Snow. Whether you love it or hate it, it's hard to deny, it looks great on evergreens - especially these Yoshino Japanese Cedar. 

Use them as stand-alone specimens, screening or in small groups. They are fast growing trees that will get about 30'- 40' tall and will maintain a nice pyramidal shape with little to no pruning.  Their summer color is a bright emerald green and in winter they turn bronzy. They'll add some awesome winter interest and the birds will love the shelter. And best of all, they're deer resistant!
