Under Consideration: American Fringe Tree

Not your run-of-the-mill ornamental

American Fringe Tree
American Fringe Tree, clump form and single stem

Ed chose an interesting specimen this week - American Fringe Tree. While flowering Pears, Cherries, Crabapples and Dogwood are common sights in spring, when you see an American Fringe Tree in bloom you, and many others, will take notice.

Considered a large shrub or small tree, Chionanthus virginicus will grow about 12-20' high making them a good choice for the corner of a house, along a driveway and even in a mixed border.

Fringe Trees are late in leafing out which, in our opinion, just makes spring last that much longer. Its white, fringe-like flowers open in May - June and are fragrant. They will produce a small drupe which both birds and small mammals love, and has good yellow fall color. It's a native tree from Southern New Jersey to Florida and is usually found along streams and wetlands. Though it prefers deep, moist, acidic soil it is very adaptable. Full sun to partial shade is best, however it will tolerate fairly deep shade with a more open habit.

Definitely a refreshing addition to the usual spring lineup.

Here's another article about Fringe Trees from our May 24th Weekly Picks. There's a nice picture of the bloom, too!

Bulbs...

Yes, there's still time to plant!

bulbs

Another fresh round of bulbs came in this week including mixed Narcissus, Tete-a-Tete and the Paperwhite 'Ziva' for forcing (these come in boxes of 50). We also still have  a nice selection of Narcissus, Tulips, Crocus and others bulbs to help celebrate the beginning of another growing season!

Speaking of forcing, we can also order pre-potted Amaryllis for the holiday season which are great for gifts, but they need to be pre-ordered. Give us a call for pricing and colors available.
Allium moly

Lastly, don't forget about Allium moly! It's a yellow flowering Allium that grows about 10" tall and is great for filling in open spaces in the perennial border. The small bulbs are easy to sneak in between your spring and fall bloomers to create a nice splash of yellow that lasts for weeks! Go ahead...it's good to try something new!

Mark Kokinchak does a great job touching upon the subjects you need to know for licensing test.
