Native Fall Color!!!
Viburnum acerifolium
Maple-leaf Viburnum

Just up the road from Newtown's Sales Office is a nice little stand of native Viburnum acerifolium. A small deciduous shrub that generally forms colonies along the edge of the woods. Its white flowers in summer are followed by black fruit and this gorgeous red fall color. We currently have a selection of container grown Maple-leaf Viburnum for your natural landscapes, all locally grown here in Newtown!
Reminder: Water!!!
Now that we're out of the heat and into the cold it's easy to forget about watering. The ground is quite dry and the forecast calls for more sunny weather ahead.
Remember to continue watering your newly planted material as long as the ground is not frozen and there hasn't been a good rain. One deep watering per week is a good rule of thumb.
When installing new material, consider adding some Water Absorbing Gel Crystals like Terrasorb to the backfill to help hold moisture close to the root zone. Just remember - a little goes a long way!
BULBS!!!
Narcissus Ice Follies
Narcissus 'Ice Follies'
Now that we have cooler temperatures, it's a great time to get some spring bulbs in the ground, because, come spring, you'll be happy you did!
On Fire!
Virginia Sweetspire
Virginia Sweetspire
Itea virginica - a shrub you can count on for fabulous fall color!

Deer Repellent Tips from Mark

Mark with Deer Fencing and Post
Mark displays the 7.5 x 300' roll of heavy duty Deer Fencing along with a 10' post. We carry all necessary hardware including entry gates for your fencing needs.

White-tailed deer are on the lookout for whatever they can get this time of year and that often means the coveted evergreens like Rhododendron, Hinoki Cypress and Emerald Green Arborvitae to name a few. Here are some of our suggestions that will help ward off those pesky deer:

Bobbex  - Highly ranked and locally made. Spray repellent comes in Ready-to-Use and Concentrate. Remember to apply, and reapply, as directed. For the fall-winter application it should last up to two months.

Repellex tabs - This works systemically as the tablets are placed in the soil slightly away from the crown and about 3" deep. The roots then take up the active ingredient, Capsaisin, which becomes completely absorbed by the plant after 1 week to 1 month, depending on the size of the plant. Best used early spring - it will last the growing season. Each bottle contains 50 tablets.

Milorganite - Don't forget about this one! Peter had great success this season with repelling deer from our container grown Annabelle Hydrangeas using this non-burning fertilizer made from processed waste.

Spotrete (Thiram) Probably the most used among professionls with large areas to cover. Combine with a spreader sticker such as ClearSpray.

(Please read, understand and follow directions on above products.)

Deer Fencing  -  A bigger investment but well worth it especially if your customers crave the ornamentals the deer love!
