Here are a few of our picks for specimens that stray off the beaten path... just what you may be looking for this coming Halloween Week!
SERPENTINE - Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica 'Gauca Pendula') Main branches are easily trained, pendulous branches cascade downward.
CONTORTED Filbert 'Red Majesty' - Harry Lauder Walking Stick on a standard with deep burgundy leaves.
IRREGULAR - Acrocona Norway Spruce (Picea abies 'Acrocona') - The pink cones really stand out on this dwarf Spruce.
PROSTRATE Blue Spruce (Picea pungens 'Glauca Prostrata') Spreading form that's a good choice for a contemporary landscape, in a rock garden or along a walkway. Blue needles contrast nicely with greens and maroons.
SNAKE Bark Maple (Acer tegmentosum 'Joe Witt') Stripped bark on this Manchustriped Maple. Joe Witt has younger branches that are white all winter!
CONTORTED European Beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Tortuosa') Unique twisted trunk and branches on this wide-spreading Beech - also known as the Parasol Beech. Unparalleled architectural winter interest for a deciduous tree.
TWISTED - Robusta Juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Robusta Green') Bright green upright form with a somewhat irregular habit.
WEEPING Katsura (Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Pendula') has great gold-red color and sweet spun-sugar fragrance in fall - a beautiful habit when mature. Weeping Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus 'Pendula') A graceful tree both in leaf and in the winter.
WITCH-hazel (Hamamelis x 'Arnold's Promise' and the Vernal and Common Witchhazels) Depending on the species one of the earliest and latest to flower. Look for great fall color, too!
