This vigorous spreader, Tiarella cordifolia (Foam Flower), makes an awesome groundcover! The light-green scalloped leaves have a pretty maroon pattern and are clean looking throughout the season. Long runners send out new plants and small, tiny white flowers on thin stems last quite a while. Takes part shade/shade and loves rich, moist well-drained soil.
It would even make an interesting container plant!

Mark's Turf Tip: Is it Too Late for Fall Fertilizer? NO IT'S NOT!
 |
There's still time to fertilize! |
Turf grass continues to pick up fertilizer for a period of about two weeks after the tops stop growing. Around here that happens around late November - weather depending. Certainly with the warm days we've been having our cool season grasses are active and will utilize some fall fertilizer if you put it down. Also if you choose something like M-Roots (must be watered in immediately after application to be effective), you will get the added benefit of beneficial microbs and mycorrhizae for the healthiest possible lawn! |
Bulbs - It's Time to Plant!
 |
Crocus for early spring color! |
Stop over soon for a wide selection of colorful, spring blooming bulbs! Choose from Allium, Crocus, Hyacinths, Narcissus, Tulips (including some awesome mixed palettes) and others. Anyone looking for Hyacinths? We have white, pink and blue - besides adding color to your beds, they're great for fragrant spring bouquets and forcing. We also have some Grape Hyacinths - (Muscari) - great for underplanting spring blooming trees like Magnolias!

Spotlight on Elm
The Great Comeback Story
 |
l-r:Valley Forge American Elm, Lacebark Elm's fine foliage and the Lacebark's trunk at right. |
Years ago the American Elm was practically wiped out by Dutch Elm Disease. It was considered one of the best street trees around and was widely used across the nation to line many streets; understandably so, it's a fast growing tree that weathers storms, salt, excess moisture and compacted soils quite well. Around 1930 Dutch Elm Disease was discovered affecting our American Elms. It's actually caused by a fungus of Asian origin but the research was done by a Dutch team of scientists - hence the name.
New hybrid varieties of Elm are now available that are resistant to Dutch Elm Disease and can be used safely as ornamental and street trees. We carry three selections of the great American Elm -the cultivars 'Princeton', 'Valley Forge' and 'New Harmony'. 'Valley Forge' is a more rounded in habit, the other two are vase shaped with arching branches, 'New Harmony' being slightly more upright.
We also carry other Elm varieties - U. parvifolia 'Allee' or Lacebark Elm which has magnificent exfoliating bark as seen above, and U. x 'Triumph' (also called 'Morton Glossy') which has large glossy dark foliage. Both make great street trees, are resistant to DED and are under-planted, making them something to talk about!
Call either yard for more information and for availability and pricing.
