Plants to Know: Winter Gold Winterberry

(Ilex verticillata)

PC Grown Ilex verticillata 'Winter Gold'
Looking for something with a different twist to perk up your fall landscape? Then plant this! If you're not already familiar with Winterberry you should be. They're an upright deciduous Holly with small insignificant white flowers in spring. But, when pollinated by a male winterberry they will develop into some gorgeous berries as seen here that persist into the months of winter, or at least until eaten by the likes of  Cedar Waxwings, Bluebirds and even Robins.

For an awesome fall show plant them with Ornamental Grasses ie. Maidengrass or Feather Reed Grass, Virginia Sweetspire and Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) - all have fall interest and will work well together. Make this group really stand out with an evergreen backdrop of White Pine or Hemlock and you've got an awesome fall show!

Winterberry is found naturally growing along streams and ponds so it likes moist to wet soil but can also take normal garden conditions. Good exposure to sun and a male pollinator like 'Southern Gentleman' will assure good berry production.

So, what about the red berrying varieties? Sure, you can plant 'Winter Red', 'Red Spright' or 'Maryland Beauty' too - just don't forget about this winner!  Why? 'Cuz it's "GOLD, JERRY. GOLD!"

Another Plant to Know: Acer palmatum 'Tsuma Gaki' (Japanese Maple)

Acer palmatum 'Tsuma Gaki'
20" Box specimen
limited

Tsuma Gaki Japanese Maple, also known as Red Fingernails (!), is an interesting Japanese Maple for smaller gardens. It is a slow growing, low branching tree with a rounded canopy that will reach about 10' high and wide. In spring the leaves emerge light green, almost yellow with long red tips that turn a bright red-orange in fall.

Morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal but any partial shade site away from strong winds is fine. It also needs moist, well-drained soil, typical of Japanese Maples. This larger specimen is in our Newtown yard, but there are smaller sizes available, too.

Best of all - All Japanese Maples are 20% off!

Spotlight on Larger Specimens

Vanderwolf Pine 'Vanderwolf' (Pinus flexilis)

Pinus flexilis 'Vanderwolf's Pyramid'

We spoke a bit about this evergreen conifer last spring, mainly touting their awesome salt tolerance and how they're a good choice for along the shoreline, but Limber Pine are also great to use as a wind break! They are found naturally up in the Rockies - from Alberta Canada down to Mexico at elevations higher than we have here in Connecticut! The variety 'Vanderwolf's Pyramid' has a more uniform, compact habit and will grow about 20-25' high x about 10-15' wide and are narrow in youth but will develop a more rounded head as they mature. They make a graceful single specimen or a warm wintery sight when massed and the soft blue-green needles (bluer than the species), which persist for 5-6 years, sets them apart from Eastern White Pine. Very easy to grow and adaptable to well drained soils.

So warm up your customers' bleak winter landscapes - call for sizes and pricing soon!

Holy Heucheras!

Coralbells are awesome for part shade sites!

There are so many varieties of Heuchera - where do you start? By stopping in and checking them out up close! They all have great foliage to combine with each other or the likes of Ferns, Japanese Forest Grass and Hostas!
