Viburnum trilobum 'Compactum'
Feel the need to announce that fall is here? Plant Viburnum! This compact American Cranberry Bush will grow 5-6' high and wide with white flowers in May. It's a great choice for a medium-sized hedge. Check them out!
Black Mondo Grass
Black Mondo Grass
Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens

Vinca, Vinca and more Vinca!
VINCA
Will we ever grow enough?

Jorge, Carmen and company have been busy planting flats and flats of more Vinca minor getting ready for spring. Pictured here is one group which will be a haze of purple next May, here, or somewhere in the tri-state area! One of our biggest sellers, Myrtle or Periwinkle is a low spreading evergreen groundcover for partial shade sites. The blue-violet flowers combine well with yellow narcissus and other spring bulbs. Plant in moist well-drained soil in partial shade as a groundcover under trees and upright shrubs. A popular alternative to Pachysandra and it's deer resistant!

Right now we have plenty of our 1 gallon Vinca available - just what you need going into colder weather. The deeper root system on these well-rooted plants are less apt to heave from a freeze.

Tulips

Don't be afraid to try them!

Tulip Mixture
Tulip mix 'Strawberry Triumph'

With deer populations as they are here in Southern New England, many homeowners, and landscapers, have been opting for squirrel and deer-resistant Narcissus over Tulips for their spring gardens. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but at that time of year, thanks to the ever popular forsythia, we do have an abundance of the color yellow. Enter: Tulips.

There are several strategies that can be taken if the property, or garden, is not already fenced in. Deer repellents such as Bobbex or Milorganite are the first that come to mind, but you can also try to sneak them in with Daffodils and Alliums - they will add just enough color to catch the eye and hopefully go unnoticed by squirrels and deer. Just remember to make sure they bloom at the same time. Here's three simple suggestions of what we currently have in stock:

Narcissus Ice Follies (white with a yellow cup)
Tulip Centennial Mix (pastel mix)

Narcissus Mt. Hood (pure white)
Tulip Red Emperor

Narcissus Dutchmaster* (pure yellow)
Tulip White Emperor or Fire Glow Mix (Red and Yellow Mix)

Give these a try for next spring or come up with your own combinations!

*Dutchmaster is an improved variety over the older 'King Alfred' which many growers in The Netherlands have discontinued.
White Pine Needle Drop
Seasonal Needle Drop on Eastern White Pine

It's That Time of Year -

Browning Needles on Conifers

Evergreen needles don't last forever - and this is just the time of year we see the older needles turn yellow and fall, being especially noticeable on White Pine. Part of their natural cycle, it can be confused with other conditions like over or under watering, some disease or pest damage. All evergreens experience seasonal needle drop at some point, some more frequent that others. The link provided below can be helpful to you and your questioning customers.

Spotlight on Specimens

River Birch 'Dura Heat', 'Heritage' & 'Little King'

Heritage River Birch Bark
Betula nigra 'Heritage'

Betula nigra

We couldn't get through the season without talking about one of our favorite trees - River Birch. It's an easy tree to sell, mainly because of the exfoliating bark and resistance to bronze birch borer and leaf miner. Put that together with delicate foliage that turns golden yellow in fall, its fast rate of growth plus tolerance to wet soils and you've got a winner! We have some nice 'Dura Heat' and 'Heritage' available in both single stem and clump.

Need something that's not quite as large growing? Try the dwarf variety - you're sure to find a spot for them in almost any landscape. 'Little King' (aka 'Fox Valley') will only grow 10-15' with branching right down to the ground.
Betula nigra 'Little King'

Seen up close you can't miss it's trademark creamy exfoliating bark. Great for foundations, patios and accent use. Turn it into a spring feature with an underplanting of Crocus or Chionodoxa. We have several larger specimen available plus some in smaller containers.

Stop by soon to spruce up your landscapes for the upcoming winter season!
