Muhly Grass
Top: Getting ready to bloom now,  Bottom: As seen last October - wow!
Good Plant to Know
Muhlenbergia capillaris
Muhly Grass

Here's an interesting ornamental grass to consider - Muhly Grass (aka Pink Hair Grass). Narrow, medium green foliage becomes the backdrop to mauve-pink inflorescenses in September-October. It's native to our southern states and hardy up into zone 6. Plant in full sun in large groups for the best effect. Tolerant of drought, poor soils and tough windy sites such as roadside - once established. They'll grow 2-3 feet high and wide so they would make a nice front layer to an ornamental grass border. You should give them a try!

A few products you might need this fall

Bobbex display

Bobbex: Start spraying now before deer begin their fall browsing!

Burlap and Oak Stakes: Stock up now for winter protection of wind-sensitive broadleaf evergreens.

WiltPruf: Try an anti-dessicant spray for broadleaf evergreens for the already mentioned winter protection! Also great to use on holiday wreaths.

Soil acidifier: Give your customers some real blue blooms on their Mophead Hydrangeas! Getting a jump start means greater chances of achieving the bluest of blue hydrangeas for next year.

8-1-9 Healthy Turf: Beneficial microbes and 9% potassium help harden off turf grass for cold tolerance. It's organic, too!

Leaf Rakes & Tarps: Pick up some new plastic or metal spring rakes plus a tough Bulldog Tarp or two to make your fall clean-ups go smooth!

Trowels and Bulb Planters: Did I mention that the bulbs are in?

Spotlight on Larger Specimen Trees

Crimson King Norway Maple

Acer platanoides 'Crimson King'

Crimson King Maple
5-6" Crimson King Maple - Newtown

Crimson King Maples were introduced in the U.S. in 1948 and have been a favorite of many ever since. Deep maroon leaves which hold their color all season really stand out in the landscape making it, as Michael Dirr puts it, a 'horticultural exclamation point'. They will grow to 40-50' in about 25 years forming a dark, dense rounded canopy. As is typical with Norway Maples they have a shallow root systemwhich can make it difficult for competing turf grass - good to know if your customer craves the perfect lawn. Plant in full sun for best effect. Quite tolerant of clay or sandy soil and adaptable to hot, dry conditions.

Looking for something smaller than this 5-6" caliper? Give either office a call for current availability.
