Cover Crops in the Landscape?
Mark talks about groundcovers and how they work
 | Heuchera, Ajuga and Fern planted en masse add beautiful color to the ground. |
There has been a recent resurgence in modern agriculture in the use of cover crops for improved yields and for the health of plants. Many of the benefits from cover crops in farming can also be applied to residential and commercial landscapes. In the landscape groundcovers can be used in the same manner as a cover crop for these benefits as stated by Ohio State University:
- Soil Quality Improvements
Soil tilth is improved whenever a plant establishes roots and grows into compacted areas. Water infiltration is improved as well. When a field lays fallow for a period of time, the surface tends to seal and water will run off. Cover crops protect the soil surface and reduce sealing. Also, beneficial organisms in the soil, such as earthworms, thrive when fresh plant material is decomposing. Organic matter levels tend to improve with the addition of cover crops. -
Erosion Control
Cover crops reduce wind and water erosion on all types of soils. By having the soil held in place by cover crops during the fall, winter, and early spring, loss of soil from erosion is greatly reduced. - Fertility Improvements
Legumes can add substantial amounts of available nitrogen to the soil. Non-legumes can be used to take up excess nitrogen from previous crops and recycle the nitrogen as well as available phosphorus and potassium to the following crop. This is very important after manure application, because cover crops can reduce leaching of nutrients. - Suppress Weeds
A dense stand of winter rye or other cover crop can suppress weeds by soil shading. Allelochemicals from cover crops suppress the growth of other plants. - Insect Control
Beneficial insects, such as lady beetles or ground beetles, may be encouraged by planting cover crops.
As you can see, the root systems of trees and shrubs could benefit greatly from the addition of some well placed groundcovers in the landscape.
Check out our selection of groundcovers in the catalog on page 84, and don't forget there are many perennials that can be used as groundcovers as well, such as Heuchera, Hosta, Lamium, Stachys, Geranium, Tiarella, Helleborus and on and on...
-Thanks Mark!

Spotlight on Pairs of Larger Specimens
Need a pair of large matching sentinels for a driveway, to frame a property or, as Ed says, " just show off"? We have some beautiful specimen pieces including these here starting from the top:
Degroot's Spire Arborvitae
(Thuja occidentalis 'Degroot's Spire') These sharp looking Arborvitae will add a sense of formality to the landscape. Beautiful in front of stonework or out in the landscape on their own. If your customers love the Italian Cypress, then give them these Degroot's Spires! These here are 12/14', other sizes also available.
Slender Hinoki Cypress
(Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Gracilis') These tightly sculpted Hinoki Cypress will grow about 15' tall making their presence known right from the start. Plant in moist, well-drained soil in an area protected from winter winds. 8/10' seen here, other sizes in stock.
Golden Hinoki Cypress
(Chamaecyparis 'Crippsii') Designers like this plant for the bright contrast it adds to the surrounding site. Beautiful with broadleaf evergreens and other conifers. 7/8' seen here, other sizes available.
Japanese White Pine
(Pinus parviflora 'Glauca') They will grow about 30' with a varied rounded habit. A great choice for coastal properties as they are quite salt tolerant. Soft blueish needles and rounded cones add even more interest. 10/12' specimens in Newtown.
Purple Columnar Beech
(Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Purple') It's hard to miss these purple fastigiate Europen Beech in the sales yard in Newtown - they mark the entrance to the deciduous trees with panache. 5-6" seen here, others are also available!
Stop by the sales yard in Newtown to see these, or give either office a call for other suggestions. |
Mark's Turf Tips
2014 Lawn Care Starts Now!
 | Nice turf! |
In another week it will be September and even now temperatures have been seasonably cool and moisture levels are good. In short it's shaping up to be an excellent fall season for lawn installations and renovations. Fall is the best time for planting grass seed as crabgrass is no longer growing competitively and other broad leaf weeds are slowing down as well. In effect the cool season grasses have the competitive edge in the fall often continuing to grow well many years right into December. Then, grasses will continue to grow early in the spring, becoming mature enough for the first application of crab grass control in April.
If you're looking to improve your customers' lawns for next year, get started now! We have many seed mixes to choose from plus the fall fertilizers you need to ensure a fantastic start to 2014.
Don't forget to check out our two Lawn Care Programs under the Quick Links up on the left - our 4 Step Turf Care Program and our Intensive Turf Care Program. Print them up or save the docs onto your Smartphones so you'll know what to do and when to do it!
