Clethra alnifolia
Summersweet's creamy white upright racemes

Summersweet has a lot going for it! Summer flowering, long bloom-time, sweet fragrance, attracts butterflies, glossy foliage, grows in part to full shade (and full sun with even moisture), good yellow fall color, and my favorite - it's deer resistant!
Found along streams, wetlands and often seen along the wooded roadside. You can even smell its sweet scent from the car - so turn off the AC and roll down the windows!

Looking for some companions to continue the bloom-time? Plant Bottlebrush Buckeye (Aesculus parviflora), Oakleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) and Virginia Sweetspire (Itea virginica) - all summer bloomers for partial shade! Need some shade? Plant a Blackgum (Nyssa sylvatica) - a beautiful, native tree with striking fall color!
