Buttonbush - Butterflies love them!
Cephalanthus occidentalis

Tiny flowers stationed in a perfect globe with projecting style, like a mini disco ball!

Here's a nice shrub to know - especially if you're looking for a native plant to use in wet areas. Buttonbush, a.k.a. Button Willow or Honey Bells, is a medium sized shrub with glossy leaves and a rather loose form. They are much like Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia) in that they are later in leafing out each spring, bloom around the same time and thrive in the same moist shady conditions. The flowers, seen here, are a big attraction to butterflies and develop into a nutlet that persists into the winter months. Great for naturalizing in low spots that are consistently moist or wet. We carry them in 3 gallon containers which make them excellent for wetland remediation. But you don't have to wait for them to show up on a list from the wetland commission...try them for any of your eco-loving customers with some wet areas of their own!

Spotlight on Specimens
Cool bark on the Manchustriped Maple!
 |
Our 2.5-3" Acer tegmentosum 'Joe Witt'
are generously graded (over 3" caliper!) |
Looking for an unusual specimen? Ed says to take a look at Joe... 'Joe Witt' that is. One of the Snake Bark Maples, Acer tegmentosum is actually a Manchustriped Maple with some awesome green and white striped bark! Growing 20-30' it makes a nice medium-sized shade tree with year-round interest. Early to leaf out in spring, it has large 3-5 lobed, serrated, leaves that turn butter-yellow in fall. Striped bark appears light when viewed at a distance, awesome when backed by evergreens.
In its natural habitat its an understory tree, benefiting from dappled shade. Plant where it will get some protection from hot afternoon sun. The thin bark can be sensitive to winter sun scald so take some thought as to its siting. Like other understory trees, it's happiest in moist well-drained soil.
Take a look at this cool Snake Bark Maple in Newtown on your next visit.

 | Clockwise from top left: Rubeckia hirta 'Indian Summer', Solidago 'Baby Gold', R. hirta 'Autumn Colors' |
What an apt common name for these glorious plants! Very long blooming, large flowers on stiff stems on this biennial Rudbeckia. They are best treated as annuals, so plant them in full sun wherever you need color without the worry of giving them 'enough room' for growing on. Choose from 'Indian Summer', 'Autumn Colors' (both seen here with some dwarf Goldenrod) or 'Denver Daisy' which has a black eye with a mohogany ring. Plant in large groups to make a big statement, in mixed containers or use for cut flowers. Start with 6 and I bet you'll be back for more!
