Perennial Tips from Steve and John

Spent Salvia - time for deadheading!
Salvia ready for deadheading!

Many of your new-this-year plantings and existing perennial beds will be in need of some maintenance this time of year. John and Steve have put together a short list of hints and reminders for us to help keep the perennials healthy and the color going strong!

  • Mid-July is the last time to pinch back autumn flowering plants, such as hardy mums, Autumn Joy Sedum, Montauk Daisies, and New England Asters (The Purple Dome and Vibrant Dome Asters we sell here at Planters' Choice are more compact varieties that do not require such pinching.) Flowers will begin to bloom about five or six weeks after the last pinching. If you haven't been periodically pinching back these plants throughout the spring, you still have a chance to do so to prevent their becoming too leggy. Just cut them back by one third to a half of their height and fertilize. This will help them grow bushier and delay bloom time.
  •  Many landscapers do not realize that the smell of Milorganite - an organic fertilizer made from recycled sludge - acts as a repellent to deer. Combining Milorganite with Bobbex makes for more effective deer control from such deer favorites as hosta and daylilies.
  •  Another big pest problem customers have been complaining about has been slugs. We carry Earth-toneŽ Slug & Snail Control, which like all Espoma products is organic and safe for use around pets and children.
  • Deadheading many perennials will encourage new blooms and help keep the plants more vibrant by preventing the flowers from going to seed. It is possible to get a whole new flush of flowers from plants like Salvia, Catmint, Veronica, Yarrow, and Coreopsis simply by cutting all the flowers off once they start to fade. However, if the foliage has become unruly, dried out, or ruined by insect infestation, there is still time to cut back the foliage hard - just above the soil line - and fertilize. The plants will quickly start pushing new foliage and new blooms.
  • Now is the time to divide plants that go dormant during the summer, such as Oriental Poppies and Common Bleeding Hearts. When cleaning up their dead foliage, dig up their roots and divide them, making sure each new section has both crowns and roots.

Both yards are well stocked with Milorganite, WiltPruf, Slug & Snail Control and Bobbex as well as some great, inexpensive snips - perfect for deadheading! And hey - don't forget to check out the Weekly Special!

Thanks guys!

The Skinny on Fastigiate Trees

Fastigiate Trees
We've written before about fastigiate trees and thought it was time again to point out some of these useful plants.  Every property has a spot for them whether tight up in a corner of a building, in a courtyard, along an entrance, as interesting accents or several in a line which is useful as a friendly divider. Below is a list of some of our more slender stock including evergreen and deciduous. Ask your salesperson to show you their favorites!

A. Quercus pal. 'Green Pillar' (Fastigiate Pin Oak) 50' H x12'W Forms a narrow, columnar tree with glossy dark green leaves that have nice fall color.
B. Liquidambar styr. 'Slender Silhouette' (Fastigiate Sweetgum) 50'H x 5' W Very fastigiate form, super narrow with star-shaped leaves and another stunner when it comes to fall color!
C. Picea glauca 'Pendula' (Weeping White Spruce) 40'H x 8'W  Weeping, yes, but narrow with an upright leader. Nice evergreen accent for a sunny location.
D. Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyckii' (Green Columnar European Beech) 60' H x 10'W No pruning necessary to keep this one narrow. Beautiful against a brick facade. The original tree was found in Scotland and considered by M. Dirr to be the handsomest of narrow trees.
E. Fagus sylvatica 'Red Obelisk' (Red Columnar European Beech) 12'H x 3'W is the 10 year size with a compact habit and dark purple leaves. Plant several in a line for a very interesting screen.
F. Carpinus betulus 'Fastigiata' (Fastigiate Hornbeam) 30-40' H x 20-30' W Very narrow in youth growing oval with age. Densely branched they're great for nesting birds in spring.
G. Cedrus atlantica 'Fastigiata' (Fastigiate Atlas Cedar) 15' H x 5'W One of the best blue-green needled narrow evergreens. Best used on their own as a specimen.
H. Prunus cerasifera 'Crimson Pointe' (Purple Leaf Plum) 20'H x 6' W The only flowering ornamental in our group here, and with purple leaves to boot! Light pink flowers open just before it leafs out in spring. A very useful size for many applications.

Come on over and take a look at them all. Also - Morton Arboretum out in Illinois has an interesting article on Fastigiate Trees complete with a size chart - check it out!

News from Watertown
Tale of Steve's Daylily

Hemerocallis 'Mallory Brook'
'Mallory Brook' Daylily
An almost lost treasure was found...and renamed! Planted along an embankment years ago at Steve's house in Washington Depot, this daylily, whose name has long since been forgotten, was severly compromised during Irene back in 2011, almost washed away! Steve dug up the remainder and re-named them after the stream in his backyard - Mallory Brook.
The flower has phenomenal color: iridescent velvety red-orange petals with a deep yellow throat. Growing about 24-30" tall it's excellent for massing or use for some wild-hot color in the border. Not a re-bloomer, but who cares when its show is this vibrant!
