We have a good supply of annuals in 4 & 6" pots plus 10" hanging baskets. Also check out the Tropicals (think Bougainvilla, Lily of the Nile and Tibouchina) Also, I saw one beautiful little orange tree here in Newtown - complete with fruit! Stop by soon for best selection.
This week we'd like to highlight a favorite of so many designers and homeowners - Japanese Stewartia. An elegant small to medium tree with some definite four-season interest!
Its large, round buds open to 2-2.5" white cupped camellia-like flowers late June. Medium to dark-green leaves turn a yellow, red and dark purple in fall - stunning in front of evergreens! The bark is a green and tan camoflage with fragmented exfoliation with a trunk that develops a muscled, sinuous character with age.
Used mostly as a specimen tree, it does quite well standing on its own, but if you feel it needs companions try underplanting with Green Sheen Pachysandra. The glossy foliage really brings out the beautiful bark year round. Or try some Sungold St. John's Wort (Hypericum patulum-see below). It's yellow flowers bloom in tandem with the Stewartia and really bring out its yellow center.
Japanese Stewartia will grow 20-40' tall and have an oval to pyramidal form. Plant in full sun to partial shade in rich soil with some added organic matter if needed.
There is a very good selection of both large and smaller sizes available. Call for pricing.
This is an interesting underused shrub. Hypericums are many and Michael Dirr lists 9 of them, each with their own merits. H. patulum is considered a semi-evergreen shrub in Zones 6-7. It's a native of Japan and has large golden yellow flowers throughout the summer with green-blue leaves on reddish brown stems. Use in the shrub border or massed for a sunny summer display. Great planted near Stewartia (as mentioned above) or with Campanula 'Takion Blue', Galliardia 'Oranges and Lemons' or Geranium 'Album'.
Hypericums benefit from pruning back early spring once they start to push their new growth.
Happy Fourth of July!
We will be CLOSED Thursday, July 4th for Independence Day.
News from Watertown
Hydrangea p. 'Quickfire' seen here with Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum'
Everyone has their favorite plants and we're no exception. Even though they change as new material comes into bloom, we can't help getting excited over what we see!
Quick Fire Hydrangea - Great sturdy foliage and white bloom that quickly turns a strong pink.
Japanese Tree Lilac - Summer blooming small tree with some awesome red-brown exfoliating bark.
Stella D'Oro Daylily - An old standby and for good reason! She's a reliable re-bloomer with golden yellow trumpets!
Dianthus Silver Star Semi-Double clear white fringed petals with a maroon center - NEW for us this year!
Take advantage this week of great pricing on our ever-popular Kousa Dogwood! This year has been a wonderful year for the Kousas with long blooming, disease resistance, not bothered by deer, respectable fall color and large edible red fruit - both for birds and us!
Plant in full sun or part shade in moist, well-drained soil. They're great as a specimen, in the border or to soften the corner of a building. Backed by evergreens they make a great show!
