Yoshino Cherry, one of Ross's top picks, is seen here to the right of the pink flowering Autumn Cherry - both in full bloom. |
Ask Barb what her favorite shade tree is and the answer comes with a good deal of feeling and without a moment's hesitation: "Green Weeping Beech! (Fagus sylvatica 'Pendula') The most beautiful tree in the world."
Dave, too, is a Beech lover (and truly, who isn't), but his particular passion is his Tricolor Beech (Fagus s. 'Roseo-marginata') that he planted 17 years ago in his front yard.
Liz loves Lacebark Elm (Ulmus parviflora 'Allee') for its awesome bark texture.
Roger thinks the Red Horsechestnut Aesculus 'Briotii' is a special tree. It's a summer bloomer (i.e., later than most) and its red panicles are really eye-catching.
Ross is a purist. Give him an Elm (like Ulmus americana 'Princeton') "Such a gorgeous canopy" or a 'Yoshino' Cherry (Prunus x. yeodensis). "Nice open head that you can underplant without any problem."
Janet favors the underused (some might say " underused for a reason"-funny how tastes vary) like Japanese Snowbell (Styrax japonicus) for its fragrant dangling bells, and Fringe Trees (Chionanthus spp), for their feathery, fragrant flowers and both for their late bloom and pretty, non-messy fruit.
And Susan loves Sargentina Crabapples... In a nutshell: "when they are in bud, they are SO sweet."
