Impatient for Impatiens!
Downy Mildew Puts the Kibosh on this Annual
 No Impatiens!

If you haven't heard, bedding Impatiens (Impatiens walleriana) will be hard to find and best avoided this year. A fungus-like bad guy called Plasmopara obducens is at the root of the scarcity. The good news is New Guinea Impatiens remains unaffected so far, and we'll be getting in a variety of alternatives for your shady sites this year.

Early signs of Downy mildew are a yellowing, mottling or stippling of the leaves, often mistaken for a need for fertilizer. Soon the whole plant becomes stunted and then it melts away before your very eyes. Its near lifeless stems look like all the slugs in the neighborhood had a party. Sadly, conditions that are normally perfect for a healthy plant are even more perfect for this fungus wannabe.

To wean your customers successfully from their Impatiens addiction, start with proper site assessment.

Diagnose their shade. You know the drill. Is the site a cave-like, north-facing, maple-enshrouded horror? Then consider our mood-brightening selection of Coleuses. If the site isn't quite so ink-black, check out our colorful Proven Winner Nonstop Begonias ®. 2013 should be a fun year of habit breaking!

Keep your eyes on the Weekly Picks NOW section for the arrival of annuals.

Thanks Janet!

Plants to Know

Carex pennsylvanica

Carex pensylvanica
Pennsylvania Sedge

There's always someone asking about no-mow lawns at some point during the season and this may be one alternative to consider for a shady spot. Growing about 6-8", this clump forming grass flowers early spring (seen here), will tolerate drought, is deer resistant and is one of our native Carex. It will spread by underground rhizomes eventually forming nice mounds. It's semi-evergreen and is best cut back late winter. It will survive in full sun if there is consistent moisture.
