forsythia 5/6'
Fresh off the truck - Forsythia 'Lynwood Gold' 5/6'

Spreading Sunshine

This combo shouts SPRING!

Forsythia and Cornell Pink combo
Forsythia and Cornell Pink Azaleas

Nothing says Spring like Forsythia -  an old-fashioned favorite among many. We have a good number of F.  'Lynwood Gold'  in both 3 gallon and 5/6' B&B. Each are an exceptional value. They can stand alone or be used  for a good, deer-resistant hedge.

Looking for a lower growing variety? Think about using Forsythia 'Gold Tide'. This great spreader grows as fast horizontally as its upright cousin does vertically.  Perfect for a bank or hillside, it will spill like a river of gold at the rate of a couple of feet a year.

For a knockout spring combo, pair it with Azalea 'Cornell Pink' (Rhododendron mucronulatum).  'Cornell Pink' blooms at the same time as Forsythia in a truly gorgeous clear pink. Its fall color is beautiful, too - a rainbow of bright yellow-orange-red to rival even Sugar Maples.

And there's a fringe benefit...most report that, like Forsythia, 'Cornell Pink' is quite deer resistant. Give them a try!

-Thanks Janet!

Plants to Know

Oregon Grape Holly
Mahonia aquifolium

Oregon Grape Holly

Here's a broadleaf evergreen that is widely used in the mid-Atlantic states, but is harder to find up here in southern New England even though it's hardy to zone 5.

The new growth emerges reddish-bronze, turning bright green in spring then turns dark green by summer. Fall color is a purplish bronze. It flowers with fragrant, bright yellow racemes that open in April. They mature to clusters of blue grape-like berries in late summer to early fall and can persist into early winter. An interesting plant to use in the mixed border or foundation planting.  A big plus with this plant is they are deer resistant!

Mahonia Tip: they will not tolerate a sunny, dry location. Plant them in moist well-drained soil in an area protected from wind.
