Spotlight on Large Specimens
Under this new title we will be spot-lighting a large specimen tree or shrub each week that we currently have in our sales yards. To start it off right we're featuring two flowering trees that are in full bloom in the Newtown Sales Yard. Take a look and consider these for your discerning customers who need something special.

Cornus controversa 'June Snow'

The beautiful branching of

 June Snow Giant Dogwood

Cornus controversa (Giant Dogwood) 'June Snow' 3.5-4" caliper (12' h x 12'w)

Michael Dirr calls this a "strikingly picturesque horizontally branched tree" and that it is! An excellent choice when you need a medium sized specimen. It will grow to 30-40' tall. 'June Snow' is rounded with layered branching lending itself nicely for natural settings. Great underplanted with spring bulbs! Plant in moist acidic soil in partial shade. Native to  Japan and China. Zone 5

Fort McNair Horse Chestnut
Fort McNair Red Horsechestnut

Aesculus x carnea 'Ft. McNair'

5-6" caliper (16' high x 10' wide)

Horsechestnuts make a handsome statement and this variety is no exception. It's a popular tree in England growing 30-40' tall. 'Fort McNair' has pink flowers with yellow throats and is quite resistant to leaf blotch. Excellent as a lawn specimen admired from both street and window. Plant in moist, well-drained soils that do not become too dry.

Perennials in Watertown
Top to bottom: German Iris 'Again and Again', Dianthus 'Firestar' and D.  'Firewitch'

There's so much in bloom right now it's hard to know where to start! There is house after house of budded and blooming perennials in all colors and textures. We've been watching the Peony buds swell and expect them to open next week which should make a fantastic display!

Need flowering shrubs? Our 3 gallon Johanna Azaleas with large red flowers are a great foundation plant. These mid-season bloomers top off at about 4' high and wide are a great value. Also take a look at Peter's Weigela - flowering in both sales yards. These long bloomers shine for weeks!
Regarding trees - Duane has some awesome 4-4.5" Autumn Flame Maples dug that are perfect for anyone looking for larger shade trees!
And a  reminder: we are stocked with Tecnu! Don't risk getting Poison Ivy this season. It's a good idea to keep a bottle in each truck. Hope to see you soon!

19-0-6 with Confront and Dimension

Nice turf grass!

Just a timely reminder: On newly seeded lawns of perennial Rye grass and Kentucky Bluegrass, Confront 3 + Dimension plus

fertilizer can be applied as early as 2 weeks after seed germination first takes place. This will allow you to control broadleaf weeds like dandelions, clover, plantain and others along with crabgrass while promoting rapid establishment of the new turf!

Remember to read, understand and follow all product labels before use.

Thanks Mark!

This shade loving, perennial groundcover is a real old-fashioned favorite of ours. It's a reliable woodland spreader that has sweet fragrant white flowers in May. A great plant for those tough shady spots like on the north side of a building or under trees in rich soil where  turf grass is difficult to grow. It spreads by underground rhizomes eventually forming nice, long-lived patches. They do best in rich moist soil in partial to full shade.

Good to know: we carry other quart sized groundcovers! Ask your sales person about the quart-sized gems including Liriope, Sedum, Sweet Woodruff and Hens and Chicks.
