American Beachgrass - Best Grass for Dune Restoration

Ammophila breviligulata, commonly known as American Beachgrass, is one of the most commonly found grasses along the coastline from New England to North Carolina. It is also
American Beachgrass
Dunes are essential for our coastlines
currently found in our large propagation greenhouse in Newtown by the thousands!

It plays an important role together with dunes in protecting the coastline from the eroding action of  the tides by buffering the waves. Not easy conditions for anything to survive, this grass rises to the occasion tolerating scorching heat, salt, low amounts of organic matter and little water. It is also constantly getting buried and stripped by strong winds and tides just like we saw after Hurricane Sandy.

American Beachgrass will grow 2-3' high and quite wide spreading up to 6-10' each year. It has a dense root system with tough stems which continue to grow even when buried by sand! It does produce a seedhead but most of the expansion is done below ground level by the spreading rhizomes. Read American Beach Grass for a quick guide to learn how it grows and how to plant it from Cornell's Cooperative Extension.
