A sample wreath looks great as is on the door to P1! |
Make Planters' Choice the first stop for your seasonal displays. Start with some fragrant Balsam Fir or mixed Cedar & Pine wreaths on wire frames ranging from 8" to 36" across. Decorate them further on your own or choose some of our colorful pre-decorated wreaths, ready to go and great for windows and entryways. Need some roping for along stone walls or fences? We'll also have Balsam and Cedar & Pine roping in 30' rolls. Have seasonal containers you need to fill? There will be bundles of fillers and tips plus swags of mixed greens!
All this should arrive in Newtown any day (hopefully by Tuesday). Give us a call to confirm availability or to place any larger orders.

The 3 R's of Life-After-Sandy Repairs, Renovation and Replacement
Many questions are coming in on how best to restore our storm-ravaged landscapes. High on the list is:
What can we do now that will help prepare our plants for the next storm?
Janet responds: Preparing for next time means thoughtful plant selection, and good cultural practices:
- Choose the right plant for the site. We can help you match your customers' wish lists to their sites real needs. There are many characteristics that can make one tree "windfirm" such as having a tap root (Oaks)...having an open form (Japanese White Pine)... having a light leaf (Honeylocust or Scholar Tree) or a deciduous needle (Bald Cypress or Dawn Redwood).
- Keep your trees clean. Remove dead wood and thin tree canopies.
- Prune shrubs appropriately, if regular maintenance is practiced, one should never take more than a third of the plant at a time when rejuvenating (just as you wouldn't cut more than a third of the blade when mowing). After Sandy, prune damaged wood only. As much as possible, leave fussy shaping for after the plants recover. Plants with more leaves in spring can make more food to recover faster.
- Feed, feed feed. NOW. After flushing salt thoroughly from anything that was inundated, feed damaged plants. Promoting vigorous root growth is crucial for stressed plants. Roots will still take up nutrients while the weather remains mild, and plants will flush stronger in the spring if nourished now.
- For post-Sandy 'meds' our first choice, hands down, is PHC'S BioPak Plus 3-0-20 .Keep in mind, BioPak includes rhizopshere bacteria which need to be IN the soil (not ON it) to do their thing - easily accomplished with this water-soluble product. After flushing out any salt Sandy may have brought, drench with these amazing microbes. Remember, you want them to go DOWN WITH THE ROOTS, multiplying by many times the nutrient uptake ability of your plants.
Submit your landscaping question via email to sbarbier@planterschoice.com and you'll be entered in a monthly drawing to receive 10% off your next purchase (pick up only, does not apply to deliveries). Please use "Question of the Week" in the subject line and let me know if you want your name and business mentioned. |
