Chemical in coffee may help prevent obesity-related disease

Athens, Ga. - Researchers at the University of Georgia have discovered that a chemical compound commonly found in coffee may help prevent some of the damaging effects of obesity.

In a paper published recently in Pharmaceutical Research, scientists found that chlorogenic acid, or CGA, significantly reduced insulin resistance and accumulation of fat in the livers of mice who were fed a high-fat diet.

"Previous studies have shown that coffee consumption may lower the risk for chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease," said Yongjie Ma, a postdoctoral research associate in UGA's College of Pharmacy and lead author of the paper. "Our study expands on this research by looking at the benefits associated with this specific compound, which is found in great abundance in coffee, but also in other fruits and vegetables like apples, pears, tomatoes and blueberries."

During the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. More than one-third of U.S. adults and approximately 17 percent of children are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the annual medical cost of obesity is more than $147 billion.

Aside from weight gain, two common side effects of obesity are increased insulin resistance and the accumulation of fat in the liver. Left untreated, these disorders can lead to diabetes and poor liver function.

To test the therapeutic effects of CGA, researchers fed a group of mice a high-fat diet for 15 weeks while also injecting them with a CGA solution twice per week.

They found that CGA was not only effective in preventing weight gain, but it also helped maintain normal blood sugar levels and healthy liver composition.

"CGA is a powerful antioxidant that reduces inflammation," said Ma, who works in the laboratory of professor Dexi Liu in the department of pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences. "A lot of evidence suggests that obesity-related diseases are caused by chronic inflammation, so if we can control that, we can hopefully offset some of the negative effects of excessive weight gain."

But the authors are quick to point out that CGA is not a cure-all. Proper diet and regular exercise are still the best methods to reduce the risks associated with obesity.

The mice in this study received a high dose of CGA, much higher than what a human would absorb through regular coffee consumption or a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

However, the researchers do believe that CGA may form the foundation of a treatment for those who need extra help. They plan to conduct more research to develop an improved CGA formulation specifically for human consumption.

"We're not suggesting that people start drinking a lot of coffee to protect themselves from an unhealthy lifestyle," said Ma, who is also a member of UGA's Obesity Initiative. "But we do think that we might be able to create a useful therapeutic using CGA that will help those at risk for obesity-related disease as they make positive lifestyle changes."

This research was highlighted in the latest issue of the monthly newsletter, Columns, a newsletter sent out to alumni, staff, and faculty of The University of Georgia. While I understand that we would have to consume a very high level of coffee to reach the benefit level described here...you just may want to think about sending along a bag of The Alpaca Bean Coffee to your loved one if you intend to present her/him with a heart filled with chocolate this Valentine's Day!  :o)

On A Personal Note......

Love, an often used and abused word in our language today, but one that probably is not used enough in its truest form.

You know there are three ways to conduct ourselves as we relate to the world surrounding us...we can be totally self centered, regarding only what we feel is right and justified, or we can be totally non committal, taking no responsibility for anything or anybody, or we can be totally involved with our world, seeking ways to improve our community, our families, and our country without seeking recognition other than what falls our way.

I believe we can see good/bad examples of each of these playing out in our world today...but you know I choose today to train myself to look for the good, the positive, and the humble among us.  You see I really do not care who deflated footballs, because football is merely a distraction, a fantasy of sorts in this life of ours.  There are many among us that will not be able to watch the Super Bowl because they do not have a TV...matter of fact, they do not have a home.  However, no matter how many footballs have been deflated, nor inflated for that matter, you can bet there will be billions watching to see a bunch of guys, as talented as they are, try to totally beat down other talented guys for a shiny football on a trophy.  AND, we will glorify them for doing just that.

Do not get me wrong, I "love" the game of football.  Matter of fact, not too long ago I lived and died football, especially when my beloved Bulldawgs were playing.  But, something happened as I entered the fourth quarter of my own life here on this beautiful earth...something I cannot explain except to say that members of my family became more precious, I tend to want to hold onto them more.  My friends tend to be in my thoughts more often, and the success of projects with my soul mate and love seem to be more urgent than they were before.

There once was a movie, a war drama, Kelly's Heroes, where one of the characters, played by Donald Sutherland, kept getting onto his pals saying, "Negative vives, negative vives!"  You see he was telling them that the only way to get things done was through positive thinking...in other words they needed to quit complaining and get involved in a way that would benefit themselves AND all those surrounding them.  No excuses, no pity parties, no blaming others, no woe is me, just some good old working together for the common good.

That could well mean you will have to foster a true love for some of the same folks that have been thorns in your side over and over.  LOVE for people you just as soon not deal with?  Yep, and empathy for their burdens as well...boy, do I have a problem doing that...and that is why I need to train myself to look for the good, and to know how to appreciate the good.

Gettin' back to deflated footballs...no, I will not go there again!  Better yet, I will simply brew up a pot of good ol' The Alpaca Bean Coffee, turn on my TV...and get ready to watch the Super Bowl COMMERCIALS!!!!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!  FILL YOUR HEARTS WITH LOVE THIS MONTH AND WE WILL BE BACK WITH YOU SOON!

Peace,
