On A Personal Note:
Well, you caught me in another reflective mood - yep, one that is based on recent interactions with my life today, and reflections on my life in the sixties, seventies, eighties, and beyond. Beginning to sound a bit like Star Trek, huh?
A positive characteristic, or, at least one that I find very positive in an individual, is persistence...a "never give into adversity or challenge", characteristic in an individual. You see, I feel that this characteristic is, or has been, very instrumental in my own life thus far.
Why? Well, I witnessed a very brave woman undertake the day to day challenges that saw her raise a family by herself from the time her husband died at a very young age. A woman that while fighting to keep her jobs, maintain a home, pay a mortgage, set and keep high standards for her kids and herself, was able to allow her family the freedom to grow a healthy respect for honest work, no matter the nature of that work. You see, our Mom was quite a woman...maybe a bit ahead of her time...maybe, in some ways, a throwback to the times that shaped her will and character.
Whatever the reason, either through observation or experience...maybe both...the coffeeman began to understand the importance of never accepting dire predictions of his fate...from the times that he heard, "You will never be able to go to college, might as well forget it!" or "You will never make an administrator...just don't have the nature for it!" or "Grad School? Ha! No way you will be able to finish that with a wife and two kids!"
Those of you that know the coffeeman's and Jude's (the alpacagal)histories know that they did indeed go to college, then return to finish their degrees at West Georgia College (now The University of West Georgia) and The University of Georgia. The Coffeeman then went on, after school, to a 33 year career as an administrator that included helping to set up an executive training program for the University of Georgia to better equip executives with the needed skills to excel in their leadership roles. The Alpacagal graduated at the top of her class and excelled as a teacher of hearing impaired individuals, being named Teacher of the Year at her school in South Carolina and being nominated for the same honor while teaching in Georgia.
Even after that, we still heard, "You are going to do what? Alpaca farming...you know you won't be able to make a go of that don't you?" Well, we are in our eleventh year as alpaca farmers, and Judy and I often pinch ourselves to make sure we really are living out here on what I truly believe to be a bit of heaven...with some special creatures and a bonus to boot...a coffee roasting operation that brings us and many others a good deal of pleasure...
Why am I telling you these things? Is it to boast or brag? Well, it sure looks that way as I read over this piece, but my intent is to say just one thing...do not ever give up on yourselves...you are too special for that, and only you know your potential...no one else has a clue and will only find out when looking back on the finished product or the impact you make over time.
"Pray like God will provide ... work like you must provide!"
From a sermon by Mac Enfinger
Do not take no for an answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I can leave anything to my daughters, sons-in- law, and grandkids...do not ever give in or up on what you believe.
Now, get that pot brewing with some good ol' The Alpaca Bean Coffee...sit back, enjoy a game or two, and give your loved ones another well deserved hug!
Peace,
The Coffeeman
