All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" - which means, "God With us."
Matthew 1; Verse 23

A husband and wife are fighting about who has to make coffee in the morning. The wife says "You wake up before me you should do it." The husband says "It's part of the cooking so it's your responsibility." "No." the wife says. "It's in the bible that the man makes coffee." The husband says "Prove it." The wife goes and gets the bible and sure enough there it is..."HEBREWS"

Who Knew That Coffee Had Roots in Christianity?

By Bethany Ramos

Just when you thought you knew everything about your beloved cup of Joe...

The Church Coffee Culture

Today, church and coffee go hand-in-hand. After all, it's one of the only legally accepted speed-like substances that you can sip on with a clear conscience on a Sunday morning.

Most large churches today have even set up their own coffee shops on the premises to encourage people to visit, socialize, and come again. Oh, and let's not forget about the many Christian coffee houses that have popped up throughout the nation to offer non-drinking churchgoers the opportunity to relax with friends outside of a bar environment.

Of course, other churches are guilty of brewing up sludge that they try to pass off as coffee to their parishioners. But nobody's perfect, right?

The Baptism of Coffee

But Christianity hasn't always been a fan of coffee. Priests in the 16th century believed that coffee was the "devil's drink". The priests were convinced that Satan's followers were forbidden from drinking wine because it was used in Holy Communion, so they drank coffee instead.

More specifically, you can thank Pope Clement VIII for his influence on historical coffee culture. The Pope was pressured by his peers to ban coffee because of its popularity with the Muslims. But rumor has it, after he tasted the delicious brew, he said that the devil's drink was so delicious that Christians should cheat the devil by baptizing coffee. I have to say that I wholeheartedly agree!

This means that the good ole Pope decided to give coffee his blessing in 1600. This was all that Europe needed to quickly jump on the coffee bandwagon and spread its popularity throughout the continent. Just 50 short years later, coffee houses became prevalent in Italy. By 1675, there were more than 3,000 coffee houses in England.

In 1683, it was actually a Franciscan Friar that was claimed to have invented the cappuccino. He also played a part in stopping the Turkish invasion of Austria, but many coffee lovers today may argue that inventing the cappuccino is a much more notable accomplishment!

Coffee and Religion

Across-the-board, coffee is widely accepted and increasingly popular on a global basis. But as far as individual religious practices go, some religions, like Mormons, encourage their followers to abstain from caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea. Seventh Day Adventists also fast from coffee, and the most devout Muslims avoid it altogether.

So what about you? Is coffee a regular part of your Sunday morning ritual, or do you still consider it to be the "devil's drink"?

Now THAT is not your typical bit of reading here at The Alpaca Bean Coffee Company News...don't you agree?  Fun to read though and it is really kinda true, don't you think?  Found this short piece on a blog as I was surfing trying to find something you would enjoy.  That is what this season is about...finding enjoyment and passing it along to others that may not have the good fortune to have it in their daily lives.

We here at The Alpaca Bean Coffee Company, hope your enjoyment of this special holiday season is only enhanced as you sit (or stand for that matter) and enjoy the warmth of family and friends.  When you go to your house of worship this week, maybe just maybe, you will have the opportunity to stand around holding onto a warm cup of coffee... talking, laughing, sharing, and hearing...enjoy!
On A Personal Note......

You know we are in the season of the year that tends to make us more accepting, and there is a sense of "friendliness" that often is missing in the other parts of the year.  Have you ever taken time to wonder why this is?  I know I have and I cannot help but believe that it is clearly a result of anticipation...yep, anticipation of a miracle.  You know something like, "Miracle on 54th Street" or "It's a Good Life", or even "The Grinch Stole Christmas"...where goodness wins the day!

We like to think that what we are doing is something of value, something that may make another's life a little lighter, or happier...or at the least, a bit of either.  As we reflect back on our lives (some of us have a lot more reflection to do than others), we may not be able to see where we made any difference, but oftentimes that significant difference is hidden from us...but it may still be there.

This past week I got word that a fellow that I knew as a rather young guy, after all he was only eight years my senior, had passed from this life.  You see that "young" guy was my track coach in high school, Coach Gray.  He was the one that spotted that I really was running in the wrong event and pointed it out to me.  Of course being the wiser, I insisted that the mile was surely what I was meant to run...you know I was either winning each meet or coming in at the top somewhere.  He just smiled and let me go on believing because he knew that was important for a young guy that had just lost his dad...but he quietly put me as a leg of the mile relay so that I would at least run where he thought I fit best, the 440 yd run (or as it is called today the 400 meter dash).  I only discovered his wisdom when I reached the college level...my first formal practice I quickly realized that there were real mile runners in college AND I was not one of them! :o)  BUT I could hold my own in the 400...strange isn't it how really good coaches can spot ability where it lies rather than in the mere dreams of the athlete.  Coach Gray was one of those good coaches...he made a significant difference in my life at a time when I needed a difference maker.

Often in the past newsletters, I shared my opinions on articles and books I had recently read...ones that could make a difference in how we think, or maybe even act.  I want to share a few thoughts on a set of books that I feel really fit into the lives of all human kind, and at the same time reflect on the journey that the wonderful season of Christmas began so many years ago.  The titles of the books are:  John's Story: The Last Eyewitness; Mark's Story:  The Gospel According to Peter; Luke's Story:  By Faith Alone; and Matthew's Story:  From Sinner to Saint

These are novels, written by two gentlemen with good imaginations and equal amounts of Biblical knowledge.  I recommend them to you, not as readings to influence you or your thinking in any direction, but as books that tend to put a framework around the time of Christ and the events that could have occurred at that time surrounding a few fellas that were rather amazing in their own right.  I found myself being drawn into a time that I can hardly imagine and then being given a glimpse of what life may have been like over 2000 years ago.  I, needless to say, found it most informative and a very appropriate read for the Christmas season.

With that said, Judy and I want to wish you the best of the season and a fantastic upcoming year known as 2013.  The Alpaca Bean Coffee Company stands ready to provide you with many, many peaceful and delicious moments wherever you call home.

Peace, and May the Blessings on The Holiday Season Remain With you
