May 2015 - In This Issue:

From film screenings to bike swaps, learn-to-rides to free tacos and beer, there are more ways than ever to celebrate the joy, efficiency and health benefits of riding your bike this Bike Month! Our motto for this year is "Give it a try!" Even if you already ride a bike, encourage your friends, family and co-workers to saddle up and discover how riding a bike to work, school or errands can transform your life!

MISS MULTIMODAL: WHY DARLENE RIDES

Next month, Community Builder Darlene Watkins will celebrate her first anniversary commuting by bike, and going car-free.  She sat down with Bike Austin to share why she rides, her multi-modal commuting strategies and her tips for new commuters.  We started out by asking Darlene about the benefits of switching from four wheels to two:

"Without the use of a car, my lifestyle, by choice, has been reduced to essential items; no waste for me. It's better to travel "lite." I don't rush anymore; I embellish in going slower. My mind is sharp, my body is physically stronger, I am experiencing a different kind of smartness. I inherit wisdom daily. I am totally amazed at what I see everyday. It's not just the bike, it's seriously multimodal thinking - bike, bus, walk, carpool - that works well for me. Without abandon, I am always happy to talk to the community about my multimodal experiences. Perhaps I will get more gray-haired older women like myself to take that leap of faith."

What are some commuting tips you have for new riders on Bike To Work Day?

"Forget about "Bike To Work Day", what about "BIKE TO LIVE!" I say stop lying to yourself and just take the plunge. Choose bike or bus or carpool or walk for yourself and not anyone else!"
