The Art of Shelling in Sanibel & Captiva
by HuffPost Travel Writer Michelle Rae Uy
|
|
Shelling is not just a casual endeavor that people do on the side, time permitting. At least not on the islands of Sanibel and Captiva in the Southern section of Florida's shimmering gulf coast. And especially not to the folks that live or frequent there. On these quiet, idyllic barrier islands that together form a natural scoop for the shelled mollusks that roll in from the West and the South, shelling is, more than anything else, a way of life.

Shellzam! I am sooooo excited to have an official day to shellebrate our greatest obsession ... seashells.
So when I heard the good folks of Lee County Visitors Bureau were going to officially proclaim that every June 20th of each year would be National Seashell Day, I joined them at the courthouse donned in my JUNONIA costume and loudly sounded my CONCH horn to shellebrate this awesome day. Sake-Steamed Pine Island Clams with Soba Noodles- Chef Criss Menassa, Sundial Beach Resort & Spa
Ingredients:
- 8 oz soba (Japanese-style) noodles
- 1 bunch green onions, white parts and dark-green parts separated, thinly sliced on a bias cut
- 1 jalapeno, seeded sliced
- 1' piece of fresh ginger, peeled, minced
- 2.5 lbs. Pine Island clams, scrubbed
Method:
Cook soba noodles in a large pot of boiling salted water, stirring occasionally, until al dente. Drain and rinse in cold water. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add white parts of scallions, jalapeno and ginger. Stir until aromatic, about 1 minute. Add clams; stir to coat and cook for 1 minute, then pour in sake. Cover and cook until clams open, 4-6 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer clams to a bowl. Discard ginger slices. Transfer noodles to the clam juices in skillet and cook for 1 minute to warm through. Divide noodles among four bowls. Toss clams, along with the scallion greens, back into clam juices. Divide clams and broth evenly among bowls.
