Window Frames
'Open the Window and Kiss the Night Air' - Franz Kafka
Windows play an essential role in the character and value of your home. If you are considering updating your windows, here are some factors to consider as you make this valuable investment:

Building Code - Energy Efficiency and Turtle Friendly:

In June of 2015, new building code for energy efficiency went into effect for Lee County. Windows must now have compliant SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient) and U-factor (measures how well your window insulates) values.

Depending on the location of your home, you may be required to have windows with Turtle Safe glass. This type of glass has a protective coating which shields light that my disorient turtle hatchlings.
Window Styles

Insurance - Take advantage of insurance premium discounts by installing impact resistant windows. These types of windows eliminate the need for exterior storm shutters and add tangible value to your home.

Aesthetics - There are many choices to make when selecting new windows: style, frame material, fixtures, exterior shading strategies and cost.

ALUMINUM OR METAL FRAMES
Although strong, light, and almost maintenance free, metal or aluminum window frames conduct heat very rapidly, which makes metal a very poor insulating material. Thermal breaks can be added to help with insulation.

COMPOSITE FRAMES
Composites are very stable, they have the same or better structural and thermal properties as conventional wood, and they have better moisture and decay resistance.

FIBERGLASS FRAMES
Fiberglass window frames are dimensionally stable and have air cavities that can be filled with insulation, giving them superior thermal performance compared to wood or uninsulated vinyl.

VINYL FRAMES
Vinyl window frames are usually made PVC with UV stabilizers to keep sunlight from breaking down the material. Vinyl window frames do not require painting and have good moisture resistance.

Recipe of the Month
Vichyssoise with Cucumber Garnish
by Chef Criss Menassa, Sundial Resort
Vichyssoise by Chef Criss
Ingredients
  • 10 large leeks
  • 4 large onions
  • ˝# butter
  • 4 quarts vegetable stock
  • 2.5 quarts heavy cream
  • 1tbsp salt (to taste)
  • 1tbsp teaspoon white pepper to taste
  • 1 to 2 tablespoon chopped cucumber to garnish
Method
1. Chop the leeks. Wash them in a vessel of water, allowing the grit to fall to the bottom of the container. Lift the sliced leeks into a colander to drain. Rinse well

2. Dice the potatoes and onion.

3. Melt the butter in a large soup pot or rondeau. Add the leeks, potatoes and onions, stirring to coat them in melted butter. Turn the heat to low. Cover the pot and allow the vegetables to 'sweat' for 15 minutes, stirring every 3 minutes to prevent burning.

4. Add the vegetable broth, salt and pepper.

5. Add 2 quarts of heavy cream and Turn up the heat and bring to simmering point. Lower the heat and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes until vegetables are tender.

Chef Criss Menassa Sundial Beach Resort
6. Blend the soup until smooth with an immersion blender or in batches using a food processor or blender. Chill the soup to 45 degrees using an ice bath or chill stick. Do not attempt to chill the soup solely in the refrigerator as this will raise the temperature of your refrigerator.

7. Once the soup is sufficiently chilled, whip the remaining heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Fold half the whipped cream into the remaining chilled soup until well incorporated.

8. Serve hot in chilled soup bowls, with chilled soup spoons. Garnish with chopped cucumber
