A Rarified Place
The islands, Pine Island Sound to the east and the Gulf waters to the west are home to some of the rarest species on earth. Some are listed federally endangered or threatened, others are listed as imperiled by the State of Florida. On any given day, here on the islands you may not be aware the wildlife that appears common, can actually scare in many other places.
In the world of birds, it is easy to spot an osprey diving for a fish, brown pelicans soaring, ibis poking in the surf, or a snowy egret with its black legs and yellow feet. In the bay one may spot little blue and tri-colored herons, along with roseate spoonbills. Granted the reddish egret may be more difficult to see considering that although many are grayish blue with brick red neck and head feathers, others of the same species are all white. No fair!
What is nice is that all these birds are large enough to see without far-reaching binoculars and may be as close as the next piling out on the pier or at the edge of the shore. What may not be appreciated at first glance is that all of these birds are all listed as imperiled in Florida. That means their numbers are dwindling.
Many birds forage at low tide on the mudflats and sleep on nearby islands. The birds have good taste in choosing their roosts and raising their children in our neighborhoods.
Small toothed sawfish and Nassau grouper, Goliath grouper and a few other species of fish are either protected year round or in special seasons such as spawning time. Even some species of sharks are also on the prohibited list. Knowing that 95% of the world's sharks have vanished may compel people to strictly do catch and release. The near shore waters also host some special marine reptiles- sea turtles. Kemp's ridleys are known to graze in the grasses of the bay as well as green sea turtles that enjoy the lush sea grasses. Loggerhead sea turtles are particularly fond of the beach for nesting during late spring and summer. Kemp's, as youngsters not much larger than a five gallon bucket, they feed in our back yard. Then there are our charismatic marine mammals. Manatees and bottle nosed-dolphins are protected under the Marine Mammals Protection Act. Enjoy them from a far, but give them some space. These islands were declared a sanctuary island in the late 1930s because people recognized the value of the area to wildlife. Humans cherished the island as a quiet, unique retreat from the hectic world, some of which has been preserved because foresighted people recognized it was a haven for vanishing wildlife as well. It is a rarified place not by altitude, but by attitude. For this we give thanks.
