Fishing & Shopping
or, The Things We Do For Love

By Dave Jensen

We all have our favorite things to do...and things that are our least favorite.

Sometimes we find ourselves doing our least favorite things because it's what your partner wants to do; so you make the best of it.

Shopping is one of my least favorite things...but I've learned to make the best of it because I do love people watching. Observing how different we all are, how we behave in the most normal of circumstances, and how we interact with each other, makes my heart happy and usually provides me with a few good belly-laughs.

Those who do not share the same enthusiasm for fishing may be surprised to find a similar joy as I do in people watching, when they tag along with their loved one for a day on -or nearby- the water.

First, let's observe the obvious...there's a real diversity in people watching while fishing. All sorts of different fashion trends are encountered. From the shore fisherman who are expecting to get very wet; so they don swimwear...to those who fish from the dry comfort of a boat; sporting state-of-the-art, sun-protecting, keep-you-cool wear...to those in just plain shorts & t-shirts with funny sayings such as "Born to Fish, Forced to Work".

An extra bonus for those who find themselves tagging along on someone else's day of fishing, is to see and hear all the wonders of nature that surround us here in Southwest Florida. Any location next to -and on- the water, provides an unimaginable amount of wildlife splendor.

Fishing from the beach here on Captiva, and on Sanibel, you don't have to look far to see animals and creatures of all kinds. Looking down at your feet, you may find our many live shells and tiny crabs. To the delight of the fisherman some of the best bait, the hard shell sand flea, can be found scurrying to hide under the soft sand. Gaze over the water and you will likely see pelicans diving for their lunch of fresh fish or dolphins breaking water for some air. To your left and right shore birds peck away in a strip of shell sand for some of their favorite foods, such as periwinkles and coquinas.

Just when you thought you'd seen it all, you realize during your time fishing, that gorgeous Florida sky has been filled with the bright shine of sun, the most brilliant blue of sky, and clouds that resemble fresh cotton candy...Breathtaking!

If you're lucky enough to be on a boat, or if you've hired a Captain to go fishing with, you will see way more than one would see at any big aquarium or specialty theme park. Here in Pine Island Sound it's not unusual for a fisherman to catch a dozen varieties of fish in one trip; especially for those who set up between the islands in the areas of Redfish, Captiva, and Blind Passes. Varieties such as redfish, snook, sea trout, pinfish, ladyfish, sheepshead, mangrove snapper, shark, catfish, grouper, black drum, whiting, and much more.

Birds will surely make a visit while you're fishing. They're curious creatures and, heck, they get as hungry as we do! Cormorants and anhingas, pelicans and gulls...all watching what you are doing from above, before swooping down to say hi. And then there are those winged friends you see above, who don't come close, but go about their business from afar...eagles, ospreys, frigates and herons stay busy flying to and from their favorite hangouts.

And, of course, the ever-lovable manatees; the gentle grazing cows of the sea. An observer of nature is sure to be envious of the manatee's leisurely lifestyle!

While you're observing just under the water's surface, let's remember to peek at those who offer themselves up for our bait, such as shrimps and crabs. Check them out close-up...wow...what unique structure those little critters have!

And talk about one-of-a-kind...how about a chance encounter with a real, live mermaid on Captiva's sandy beach? Bet you won't find that on your shopping excursion!

I really hope this accompanying video of some of my favorite outdoor memories inspires your very own nature-encounter soon; even if your first thought was, you'd rather be shopping. Next thing you know, you might be looking to buy a home here in Southwest Florida!

How to buy the right shrimp (and why it matters)

To avoid confusion at the fish market, check out these simple tips for picking the right shrimp:

1. Pay Attention to Count. Size names like "jumbo" or "extra large" aren't standardized, so they don't mean a whole lot when it comes to shrimp size. Instead, look to the "count" number on the label. Shrimp is usually sold by the number needed to make one pound, so the lower the count, the bigger the shrimp. If you see "21-25 count" on the label, that is a pretty standard size, and is larger than "31-35 count." To be sure you're getting the size you want, order by the count (or number) per pound. Choose the count that's recommended for the dish you're making and remember they don't take long to cook so don't overcook them.

2. Go Frozen. Most "fresh" shrimp sold in supermarkets in the United States have been shipped frozen and then thawed for the fish counter. That means that the shrimp you find in the freezer aisle is exactly the same as what's presented as "fresh"-it just hasn't been sitting around on a bed of ice all day. Frozen.

You can take it home and keep it frozen just until you're ready to use it so you're sure it's as "fresh" as possible. To thaw, put it in the refrigerator, covered, for about a day to defrost or place in a colander under cool running water.

Makes: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 4 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
  • 2 large red bell peppers, diced
  • 2 pounds asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1-inch lengths
  • 2 teaspoons freshly grated lemon zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound raw Florida shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Preparation

  1. Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add bell peppers, asparagus, lemon zest and 1/4 teaspoon salt and cook, stirring occasionally, until just beginning to soften, about 6 minutes. Transfer the vegetables to a bowl; cover to keep warm.
  2. Add the remaining 2 teaspoons of oil and garlic to the pan and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add shrimp and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Whisk broth and cornstarch in a small bowl until smooth and add to the pan along with the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cook, stirring, until the sauce has thickened slightly and the shrimp are pink and just cooked through,  about 2 minutes more. Remove from the heat. Stir in lemon juice and parsley. Serve the shrimp and sauce over the vegetables.
