July 2014 Edition

Welcome to the July edition of our
Sanibel/
Captiva E-Newsletter.

Greetings.  July on the islands is all about remembering our Nation's greatness, freedom and independence.

Residents and Visitors alike enjoy not only the freedom that our country allows but also the special freedom of an island lifestyle.  One of our great American treasured pastimes on the islands is fishing which offers the liberty of being on the water and the joy of personal solitude or sharing with family and friends.

So..... the beginning of National Fishing Month is another reason to celebrate in July on the islands.  Some of the best fishing in the world happens around the islands as depicted in This month's  Guest Columnist section providing authoritative advice on 'Fishing Our Local Waters' from our very own Island Expert.

Did you know that in 1885, due to a single, sensational catch; Sanibel

Follow the Dolphin's Lead...
Stay Local for the Best,
Most Diverse Fishing Around!

The other day I was talking with my friend Kristie Anders, who is the Education Director at the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation. I was telling her how much fun we have at our marina, meeting all sorts of people, with all different styles of fishing. Then I thought to ask her to educate me on what makes fishing our local waters so special.

"We have shallower water both in the bay and gulf", Kristie said. "Pine Island Sound is one of the higher quality estuaries (a place where fresh water intermingles with saltwater) remaining in Florida. Over 70% of fish in the Gulf of Mexico depend upon some sort of estuary or another. These estuaries are considered the cradles for fish. In fact, our dolphin don't bother migrating the way most of their kind do. Why bother?...they have exactly what they need right here, all year round!...so there is no sense traveling long distances. We live in a place where every season different species fill our waters, in a place where sport fishing was born, and where most anglers hope it is the best kept secret in the country!"  Well, Kristie's enthusiasm is contagious, so I talked to a few more fishermen & fisher women...

Captain Jesse Romero, lives in St James City and works out of our marina. Jesse says no matter what the season, there are always fish to be caught, any time of the day. He told me there is nothing more satisfying than traveling between his favorite fishin' holes, recreational fishing for redfish and tripletail.  To do this, Captain Jesse stops along any closeby channel markers or buoys and uses either live shrimp or "DOA" artificial shrimp, to catch those tasty tripletail. For the redfish, Jesse is using cut bait of  either mullet, ladyfish, or pinfish. As far as timing goes, for the reds,      Captain Romero fishes the peak of the incoming on through the beginning of the outgoing tide, when working along the mangroves...then, he does the opposite when fishing the oyster bars; peak of the outgoing on through the beginning of the incoming. Never a bad time to wet a line, I'd say!

Pat Crouch lives in Cape Coral, and told me about fishing in the Matlacha area; the waters on the other side of Pine Island, as you look east from Captiva. Pat goes for redfish and snook and usually finds them no more than 10 minutes from the Matlacha boat launch. A gratifying part of Pat's time on the water is the enjoyment he and his family get from catching their own live bait, which is what he prefers to use.  Shiners and pinfish is their bait of choice, which is rigged up "free-style", meaning no weights or extra tackle. Pat boasts (and rightfully so!) that he catches fish in every outing.

Queenie, Marissa and Vanessa enjoy seatrout and snapper
Vanessa Burghardt lives in Dusseldorf,
Germany and has been fishing our local waters every year since her first visit, with her Dad and Mom, more than twenty years ago! I caught up with her and her partner Marissa Mangione, as they just stepped back on our dock, after a day of fishing with Captain Jeff Zasadny. "We love the fishing here because there is so much variety!", said Vanessa, who then went on to tell about their catches that day which included black-tip and sand sharks, grouper, sea trout, and mangrove snapper. "In Germany, we fish mostly sweetwater [fresh water] so it is very exciting for us to catch so many different things here."  While Vanessa was telling me about how in Germany one must attend a course before you are able to get a fishing license (and even then there are a lot of restrictions
on when, where, and how you can fish), Marissa was making plans to get together, later that day, with some Captiva friends for a tasty supper of freshly caught sea trout and mangrove snapper.

Whatever your pleasure, these SW Florida waters have got something for you. And, while you're in the neighborhood, stop by our place and tell me what you love about fishing our local waters!
