Greetings!
Welcome to the December edition of our Sanibel/Captiva E-Newsletter.
When we contemplate the holidays, we are reminded of the tremendous gifts of seaside community living. The holiday glow is not just the night skies, the sparkling decorations and lights, but the luminosity in the hearts and faces of our island residents and visitors.
This month our Guest Columnist section will share "The Magical Gift of an Island Community celebrating the Holidays" from our very own
Island Resident Expert.
DON'T FORGET to check out the Beggs Best Buys and Featured Property columns for the gift that keeps giving and that would be a wonderful island property to enjoy for years and generations to come.
Finally, visit the Beggs Bits column for our free gift to you of real estate tools on our website to assist you with your real estate search.
Wishing you and yours a White (sand) Christmas, a convertible with the top down and an Island Home for the Holidays!
Come for a visit ..... you'll want to stay for a
Lifetime .....
and we can help you make it happen ......

CHRISTMAS ON THE SANDBAR
This will be my 14th holiday season on Captiva and Sanibel and I can't imagine being anywhere else. No need for a down coat that makes one look like a Sumo wrestler balancing on a pair of Ugghs. No need to jump-start the car, though some days it's nice to have the top down with the heated seat on low!
 | Susan Stuart |
It's amazing to watch Sanibel and Captiva, two barrier islands in the Gulf of Mexico, transform themselves into joyous villages with festivities for the entire family!
Luminary nights are aglow on Sanibel and Captiva from 5 - 8 PM with local businesses offering food, beverages and entertainment to holiday strollers. Sidewalks and streets are illuminated by candles and the holiday spirit becomes infectious. Sanibel's Luminary is the first Friday in December and the following night on Captiva.
The Big Arts campus will host the annual Community Chorus Concert on the 10th and the Concert Bank Performance on the 17th. Holiday Spectacular at the Herb Strauss Theater runs from December 19 through the 31st.
For those interested in history, there will be weekly presentations, presented by the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation, on topics ranging from the life of the Calusa and Cuban fisheries to the dolphins of Pine Island Sound along with history films and photos of old time Christmas celebrations on the island.
The vitality and excitement of the season is everywhere. The Captiva Holiday Village celebrations begin with the Tree Lighting and Fireworks at Tween Waters on November 29 and conclude December 15 with the community Carol Sing at Chapel By The Sea followed by refreshments at the Captiva Civic Association. During these four weekends of festivities residents and guests can participate in four parades: The Golf Cart parade where businesses and families vie to win the annual Loving Cup awarded to the best decorated; the Bahamian Junkanoo band leading revelers to the beach for a spectacular sunset; the magical lighted Boat Parade; and, a continuing and growing tradition, the Mullet March, which with its ragtag marching band and dressed up divas, honors those who have once or are still serving our country.
Arias on the beach at sunset in front of Tween Waters, hayrides through the village to South Seas, cast net demonstrations at Jensen's, children's holiday activities and decorations everywhere make it a magical place.
In keeping with the spirit of the season, a portion of each entry fee for the Captiva Holiday Village Golf Cart parade will benefit the Sanibel Captive Conservation Foundation. In that same spirit, the South Seas Island Resort marina, aglow with lights, entertainment, arts and crafts, and visits with Santa, will be open to the public with proceeds benefitting the Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida.
The traditional Christmas Eve carols and candlelight service at Captiva's Chapel By The Sea attracts hundreds of visitors each year.
There's no place quite like it. No place I would rather be!
Susan Stuart
The Captiva Community Panel typically meets on the second Tuesday
of every month. All meetings are open to the public and they
encourage all Captivans to attend.

BACK by Popular Demand: A Delicious Kind of White Christmas!
White Christmas Cake
Cake Batter 2 boxes Betty Crocker Super Moist White Cake Mix 12 oz. Coconut Flakes 12 oz Slivered Almonds 2 ˝ cups of Water 2/3 cups of Vegetable Oil 6 Egg Whites (no yolk's will turn the cake yellow) White Chocolate Mixture 12 oz White Chocolate 4 cups Water Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease 3, 9 inch cake pans with oil. Break up white chocolate and add to 4 cups of water over medium heat, stirring occasionally. In mixing bowl add oil, egg whites, cake mix, coconut flakes and almonds mix ingredients with an electric mixer. As you are mixing add in white chocolate/water mixture slowly make sure that the white chocolate is broken down. Pour batter into pans slightly over ˝ full, you will have left over mixture in case one of the cakes breaks while icing. Bake the cakes approximately for 25-30 minutes; make sure the cake is thoroughly cooked before taking out (test with a toothpick in the center of the cake.) Whipped Cream Icing 2 cups Heavy Cream ˝ lb. Powdered Sugar 1 cup Coconut Flakes Mix heavy cream and powdered sugar in large mixing bowl and mix with an electric mixer. Start the mixing on low and then move to high speed after 2 minutes. Keep the mixture on high for approximately 3 minutes or until the mixture looks firm. Before icing the cake make sure it is completely cool, leave to cool at least 4 hours. Take one of your cakes and place face down on your plate use a large spatula to put on icing on top of cake, take your next layer and place face down and spread whipped cream on top, then take last cake and place face up. Start at the bottom of the cake to put on the whipped cream on the sides and work your way up in long vertical strokes. (TIP: If your icing starts to fall put the cake in the freezer for about 10 minutes for it to firm up.) Once the sides are coated with the icing then start spreading the icing on the top of the cake. Take coconut flakes in your palm and gently push on the sides of the cake for it to stick, you should fully coat the cake. After you have the sides coated then start the top of the cake.
