Welcome to the March edition of our
Sanibel/Captiva E-Newsletter.
We are marching into March with enthusiastic momentum. Spring Break has begun and the islands are sprouting with island guests and visitors......many are returning, many are discovering for the first time and feeling lucky they did!
This month's theme is "GREEN" and as luck would have it, we have a lot of green subjects related to the islands to discuss.
We're not just talking color here......but has "GREEN" lost it's meaning and momentum? Has it just become another "Buzzword?"
As "GREEN" marketing has progressed through the last 40 years, it has gone from a fringe to mainstream. The evolution is not particularly attributable to consensus on climate change, but a growing understanding that green is worthwhile. Done correctly, green improves the function, value, and benefits provided by a product. Represented correctly, it improves the whole quality of our lives.
"GREEN" is healthy for you personally, for the environment and it can be fun. So read on about Sanibel/Captiva "GREEN"
Happy St Pat's Day! May the "GREEN" be with you!
Come for a visit ..... you'll want to stay for a
and we can help you make it happen ......

Have Prices Hit Bottom?
Has the real estate market bottomed out? Might prices go even lower? The question isn't just on the minds of potential buyers here at Sanibel Captiva Community Bank the question has great import for us too. Virtually our entire loan portfolio is secured by island real estate. When values were falling some of our clients suffered and we shared their pain. For more than a few years now we have been gazing into the depths trying to sound the bottom and recently the bottom pinged.
It is worth noting that most national lenders agree and have removed Lee County from their "declining markets" list. These major institutions with their staffs of economists are voting with their money and they also say prices have bottomed out. This improved standing not only signals confidence in our real estate market it removes loan to value limits imposed on our formerly troubled market. Maximum loan to value ratios are higher in 2013 than they were just a few months ago in 2012 making borrowing bit easier.
Stable prices are good for property owners, good for banks like ours, and knowing we are in a stable environment should be good news for anyone considering island real estate. Have prices bottomed out? Yes we believe so.
If you would like to explore loan options or just have general questions about financing real estate please call or email.

Studies Confirm:
Beaches are Good For Your Health!
We know going to the beach is fun but now there is proof that it is healthy.
A trip to the beach reduces stress and leaves people
feeling calmer, more relaxed, and more revitalized than visits to
city parks or countryside according to a new study from the European Centre for the Environment and Human Health.
Helpguide.org advocates enjoying nature and art. "Studies show that simply walking through a garden can lower blood pressure and reduce stress. The same goes for strolling through a park or an art gallery, hiking, admiring architecture, or sitting on a beach."
StylishHealthandFitness.com recommends beaches. In "Beach Energy is Good for Your Health," the website explains "The actual crash of a wave onto the shoreline releases negative ions Into the air. The more time we spend at the ocean, the more exposure we get to the negative ions and the better balanced our bodies become. Negative ions help our bodies become stronger, more flexible and able to function at an optimal level."
Our advice: Take two strolls down the beach and
call us in the morning!

Everything You Wanted To Know
About Where the Shells Are On The Islands!......
My friend Pam shared this fun, four-leaf clover out of pen & other shells last St. Patrick's Day.
Here in the islands, we dont look through fields for four leaf clovers - we walk the beach in search of the coveted Junonia shell.
The Scaphella Junonia species lives in water from 29 m to 126 m depth in the tropical Western Atlantic. Because of its deep water habitat, the shell usually only washes up onto beaches after strong storms, or hurricanes.
And even if you don't find a Junonia - what could make you feel luckier than a sunny walk on the beach in March?
Want the latest tips on where to find Junonias and other treasures? Visit
and check out Pam's daily blog.

Captiva Beach Renourishment
Gets Grant Approval

CEPD Commissioners unanimously approved a grant agreement providing up to $4.7 million of state funding for Captiva's 2013 beach nourishment project. The State Legislature provided funding for only the top 7 out of the 64 requests.
The DEP's financial obligation in the initial agreement provided 17.88% of the non-federal project cost but was finalized upward to 22.8% following CEPD discussions with the DEP.
In light of the challenges facing government budgets, the CEPD considers the grant a "win" for Captiva Island.
