Welcome to the February edition of our Sanibel/Captiva E-Newsletter.
LOVE is in the air and Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Remember your first love?......puppy love?
Are the islands pulling on your heartstrings? Does your heart skip a beat when you cross the causeway? Do you daydream of owning your own piece of paradise? Have you fallen head over heels in love with Sanibel/Captiva Islands?
If you answered yes to any of these questions; our advice is to "FOLLOW YOUR HEART!" The market has bottomed, prices have stabilized and inventory is shrinking. This applies to the islands as well so while interest rates remain low and before prices rise; answer your heart's call and make your move NOW!
Speaking of puppy love, for all our island pet lovers, this month our Guest Columnist will provide interesting insight with the "Pets Perspective of Paradise" from our very own Island Expert.
Remember: We have a NEW website tip; please take a look in the left column for Beggs Bits
.
Come for a visit ..... you'll want to stay for a
Lifetime .....
and we can help you make it happen ......

A Pet's Perspective of Paradise

"ERNIE"
|
My name is Ernie. I'm a Havanese by birth but good fortune has turned me into a beach boy. I like golf carts, girls and gulls. I don't swim by choice though I must admit, I have a certain fascination for dead fish.
Captiva's my home but I also enjoy motor trips with the top down on the VW Bug. I like to go to Sanibel. We shop at Island Paws for my food and any dog supplies we might fancy and then usually go next door to Over Easy where (if we sit on the patio) I'm served a nice bowl of fresh water and can take a nap while everyone else eats.
Dr Dave at The Coral Vet Clinic is my primary care provider - appointments are a must (472-8387). My favorite place to be on Sanibel is the Farmer's Market On Sunday mornings. They even have booths that sell pet treats! And lots of friendly dogs are there too. Both these places - Island Paws and Coral Vet - have a list of preferred dog walkers and sitters.
I go "overseas" to get groomed on a regular basis at Golden Paw Pet Salon and Spa - a fabulous 'parlor" and doggie day center on McGregor across from Tanger Mall. Kathy is the head honcho (415-7297). They are also offering non-anesthetic teeth cleaning for dogs. Amy is the licensed and insured doggie hygienist.
Though I prefer to be at home, the best place, I believe, for boarding is The Dog Resort in Fort Myers. They also have training and socialization sessions.
I have a lot of friends on Captiva. Pastor Tom at The Chapel By The Sea is a favorite of mine. He's a good guy with a pocket full of treats and, best of all, dogs are welcome at the Sunday services.
I say hello to all the regulars at the Captiva Post Office just about every morning. And I am always eager to greet visitors to our islands.
I used to be the only guy on my block but now Winnie, Lea and Loci have all moved in. Lea and Loci have a lot of energy and like to play. Winnie and I prefer to observe. Lots of property owners who rent on Sanibel and Captiva permit pets - but it's always good to check out their policies.
I know shell seekers develop the Sanibel Stoop but so do dog owners. Our owners must leash and pick up after us on both islands. It's the law! We, in turn, must promise not to bark or bite. A pretty fair exchange.
It's fun for me to go to Minneapolis for a while each summer because they have lawns of soft, soft grass but there's nothing like home. Nothing like Captiva. And Sanibel too!
Thanks for the scoop, Ernie!

Bald Eagles on Bunche Beach
|
It is that incredible time of year when birds of all shapes and sizes visit our shores. Since it's the season of LOVE, we decided to highlight a few of our local birds that are special because they MATE for LIFE!
Look for these happy pairs the next time you're out for a stroll:
The Sandhill Crane - Can be found in along the shore of both fresh and brackish water.
Black Vulture - Often seen in groups, they nest in hollow trees, palmetto thickets and beneath the roots of tipped up trees.
Pileated Woodpeckers - Can be found just about anywhere. The male has some red stripes on their face while the female has none.
Ospreys and Bald Eagles - These birds of prey may be a ferocious enemy of those they hunt, however, both these predatory species pair up for life.
The internet is full of websites for bird enthusiasts. Some good information on mating behavior is available on Birding.about.com

Everything You Wanted To Know
About Where the Shells Are On The Islands!......
My friend Pam LOVES shelling. That is no secret! In addition to her blog and website, she has many other ways to share her passion.
Last year's winner was an incredible Sailor's Valentine by artist David Rhyne. He created it using CAPIZ, ABALONE, OPERCULUM, SCALLOPS, MOLLUSKS and LIMPETS. The center was hand painted.
A Sailor's Valentine is an intricate form of shell art developed in the early 19th century by women of Barbados and other Caribbean areas for sailors to take home to their loved ones.
I wonder what amazing new talent Pam will judge at this year's show. Visit
