I am grateful to live in a place where people I love, love to visit. Holidays and summers have brought family and friends to enjoy the things my husband and I hold dear on the islands.
The warmth of the sun in the lee of a breeze on a cool winter day; the refreshing feel of the water in the sultry summer; waves etching art into the sand and constantly revealing new treasures; knowing wildlife will offer up surprises are all gifts received without judgment or favor. All we have to do is to pay attention and sometimes it is our guests that remind us how lucky we are.
Last summer my teenage niece and nephew and their cousins were on Captiva. Our small dinghy became the source of great entertainment. It was the perfect size for them to maneuver out to the grass flats at low tide.
I got to see them as I once was, free to explore turning over shells and squishing mud between their toes. I relished watching the kids play outdoors, not in organized sports but completely engrossed in the natural world.
The dinghy had a small electric motor on it. One afternoon my brother-in-law and my nephew decided to visit the mangrove fringe of Buck Key. A few hours later, I watched them slowly rowing home. They had gotten so caught up in poking around, they ran the battery down.
Cause and effect....it the best of lessons small boats can teach us. Do something and there will be a result- either success or consequence. When queried about their rowing home, it turns out that both of them had
thoughtfully left their cell phones behind because they did not want to get them wet. That meant they could not call to tell someone to come rescue them. They both looked pretty sheepish admitting it.
I mentally ticked off all the positive results. Dad and son got to spend quiet time together; dad and son had to get themselves out of their comfort zone by coping with the loss of power and my ultimate favorite, both had to live unplugged for a few hours!
The cousins said it was a vacation they will never forget. I know that I will not too. I had renewed faith that kids can still enjoy being out and about with nothing in particular on their mind.
As an environmental educator I cannot tell you how very happy I am to have these snapshots of kids being free in the out of doors. There's a rising concern among conservationists that people are bonding with nature less and less and therefore less likely have a desire to preserve it. If you have kids or grandkids, read "The Last Child in the Woods," and you'll know
 what I mean.
So as I reflect on the things for which I am most grateful, I think, our dinghy's battery may have run low, but my heart is fully charged seeing people I love, enjoy the place I love.
