ecobeco Wins Montgomery County Small Business Award
ecobeco named 2014 Workforce Development Company of the Year
The Montgomery County Department of Economic Development recently named ecobeco the 2014 Workforce Development Company of the Year. All of us here at ecobeco are proud of this achievement. We believe that a strong company depends on a dedicated, diverse and growing workforce.

ecobeco opened up shop in 2008 to help homeowners save energy, money and the environment. By navigating homeowners and property managers through an array of state and regional incentive programs, we have helped improved the comfort, safety and energy efficiency of homes, apartment buildings, condos and more. Today, ecobeco is one of the largest providers of Home Energy Savings Programs in  the Pepco Maryland service territory. And our reach has growing even farther. This success has been achieved through the hard work and dedication of our entire team.

Thank you to the Montgomery County Department of Economic Development for recognizing ecobeco as a small business leader. We are both honored and humbled by this achievement!

From the Field
If your air filter is as dirty as the one up above (thanks, Justin), replace it!
Is Changing Your Air Filter Really so black and white?

Air filters do a great job of removing unwanted dust, pollen, dander and other airborne particles from the air in your home.  But a dirty air filter can cause all sorts of problems.  Because a dirty air filter creates more resistance to air passing through it, this can prevent proper circulation of clean air throughout your home. Not to mention it takes a lot more work to pull air through a clogged filter--this reduces the efficiency of your system.

A dirty filter can also lead to buildup of particles on your heating and cooling equipment which can affect the lifespan of your HVAC unit--which we all know is a hefty investment, indeed.  So be sure to replace it regularly.  Such a simple step can make a huge difference!

Most filters last from 30 to 90 days.  But if your home is more dusty, leaky, or if you share your home with furry four-pawed friends, you should replace them more often.  If you want to learn more about air filters or ways to upgrade your air filtration system, contact us.  We can help (it's what we do)!

Energy Industry Newswire: Energy efficiency picked for a top spot in EPA's Clean Power Plan

In June, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released it's much anticipated plans to regulate carbon emissions. The Clean Power Plan would  significantly cut carbon pollution from the single largest source of carbon pollution in the United States--existing power plants. There is a lot to unpack in this sweeping plan, but it suffices to say, energy efficiency was nominated to play a leading role. Even on a small scale, ecobeco sees the role efficiency can play in tackling big challenges. Here's a short video below describing the Clean Power Plan.

Clean Power Plan Explained
Clean Power Plan Explained

The Department of Energy's Better Buildings Residential Network says that, "[t]he EPA proposal provides guidelines for states to develop flexible plans to meet state-specific goals to reduce carbon pollution. Significantly, states can choose energy efficiency-along with a mix of approaches-to meet the goals and their own needs."

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy's (ACEEE's) Executive Director Steven Nadel released the following in a statement in response to EPA's proposal:

"Energy efficiency is the cheapest, cleanest, and most readily available energy resource to help states cut carbon pollution. Over the last several decades, energy efficiency measures, such as home energy [upgrades] and rebates for high-efficiency appliances have helped Americans save billions of dollars by slashing energy waste. By including energy efficiency in its proposal, [EPA] has created a path for states to lower consumer energy bills through modest investments. States that take advantage of this flexibility will benefit both the economy and the environment. The real story here is about economic opportunity. Based on our recent study, we project that if states choose the efficiency path in the proposal, they would create hundreds of thousands of jobs and lower energy bills across the country by tens of billions of dollars a year."

In April, an ACEEE analysis shows that energy efficiency could help states offset the need for nearly 500 power plants, reducing carbon pollution by 26%.

Apartment Building in College Park to Save $41,149 per year in Energy and Water

A typical home or apartment can save about $100-$150 (and sometimes more) annually on energy and water bills by participating in Pepco's  Multi-Family Quick Energy Checkup program.

The best part about this service is that there is NO COST for residents or building managers in the Pepco Maryland service territory. It is paid for by EmPOWER Maryland funds and is part of the Pepco Home Energy Savings program.

A recent project ecobeco completed in College Park, which houses 232 units, is projected to save approximately $41,149 per year on energy and water costs which translates to around $182 per unit! The items we installed as part of the program (check out some of them in the picture below) will be saving the property over 2 million gallons of water and 111,670 megawatts of electricity per year. The greenhouse gas emissions reductions from the electricity savings alone is equivalent to preventing 82,709,131 lbs of coal from being burned.*

Needless to say, this is a great program for apartments, condos, and other residential multifamily buildings. We encourage you to bring this information to your Property Manager or Board of Directors. We'll do all the work, and you'll see all the savings!

To set up a Quick Home Energy Checkup project for your multifamily building or property, call ecobeco at 240-396-2141 x714
