Hope to see Wednesday, July 30th !!
June 21 meeting special "2 for 1" was a success!

Combining the quarterly meeting with the monthly warehouse packing day turned out to be a fun yet productive day for W/NP volunteers to gather, share updates, and learn more about ways we can work together with the people of Nicaragua!

Tom demonstrating the "fine art" of strapping a box....it normally doesn't take 7 volunteers to pack a box, but it's much more fun working together!

Institutional linkages and affiliations have been valuable assets to the Partnership activities. W/NP has enjoyed a mutually beneficial fluid relationship with the Wisconsin National Guard for many years, so it was especially exciting to have Kathrine (Katie) Berberich, former US Army Bilateral Affairs Officer, share with us her observations and the impact she has witnessed with the Burn Therapy Dressing project.

Therapy Dressing Project Update

During the last meeting in Wisconsin, discussion centered around the need for a mobile unit as so many burn patients needing garments are far away from Managua.  The following week, we were informed of a tragic accident.  May 11th about 20 people were at a dental clinic in San Isidro, (about 60 kms from Nueva Guinea) waiting to be attended to by the doctor.  According to the police report there were two tanks in the kitchen with propane gas, one of them was leaking and the dental drill provoked an explosion and then fire to the building. 17 people were severely burned, 6 in critical condition.  There are now 12 who have survived and are in need of garments to continue their rehabilitation from the burns.

W/NP burn garment support was requested by the attending physician, plans are in the works to assist the patients in need of garments. Funds are needed to purchase more material, supplies, transportation and other needs. For online donations, Please Click here , designate burn project in the comment section.

Thank you helping to make possible the construction of the needed burn garments, much appreciated.
Learning Center Classes

Introducing new classes and opportunities as well as providing ongoing support and continuing education for Learning Center (LC) Project volunteers in Nicaragua is a vital part of W/NP program development.   Many of the Nicaraguans have expressed their desire to learn English.  Petronila, LC student turned leader, was inspired by Sherin and Lynda, two longtime WI volunteers, and as a result took on the challenge to pursue an English Career at UNAN and offer English Classes to other LC volunteers in Nicaragua.  We would like to share with you the following comments from students in the class:

Sandra, 52, "I am an active volunteer.  I am motivated to learn English because I want to talk directly with Wisconsin volunteers and be able to share my feelings.   To have English skills will provide me other opportunities to earn income, for example, to translate for other LC's I work with.  To talk English is to open doors."

Special thanks to those who have written a review about W/NP,  word of mouth is clearly the most effective method.  Sharing this newsletter with a friend, family or co-worker can really help others learn what W/NP is all about. Click here to read or write a review for W/NP
