Wisconsin National Guard visit to Managua Office

Institutional linkages and affiliations are critical assets to Partnership activities. W/NP has enjoyed a mutually beneficial fluid relationship with the Wisconsin National Guard for many years, and more recently with the WNG State Partnership program.

In late June of this year, the Managua office hosted five WI National Guard members.   The purpose of the visit, coordinated by Kathrine (Katie) Berberich, US Army Bilateral Affairs Officer, was to learn more about the projects of W/NP in Nicaragua.  Katie understands the value of collaboration and commented, "I just can't stop thinking about how little things make a big difference.  I am from Wisconsin and it is within my reach to do something small to make a big difference."  We very much appreciate their interest and especially taking time to visit and learn about the many W/NP projects that produce significant impacts as a result of volunteers from WI and Nicaragua working together.

Buenos Aires Learning Center

The children meet on Mondays, 2 -4 pm and divide the time reading, drawing or making ornaments with colorful leaves, and learning to knit.

The site visit to the Casa de la Mujer Zulema Duarte Learning Center (LC) on June 14, 2013 included attending the Graduation Ceremony for 53 students; 17 in Bakery, 18 in Cooking and 18 in Sewing.  Course requirements for graduation include 120 class hours for Bakery and Cooking and 160 class hours for Sewing.

Fatima Cordoba, LC coordinator, arranged with the technical school institution (INATEC) to provide an official certificate to the students so they can apply for work and have a certificate when required.

APAN Learning Center

APAN's Learning Center carries out many programs for the community, and although three years ago it was thought that funds would no longer be available for the center, APAN has remained strong and continues to support the community it is apart of. Commitment to children is the motivation for Ronald Mendieta, APAN Director and Janina Perez, Learning Center Coordinator and sewing teacher. They continue to support children and youth through their programs. In November last year APAN celebrated their first graduation ceremony and in June this year they held a second graduation ceremony

This past June 19th was the bakery graduation for APAN, and as part of the celebration W/NP sent volunteers Sandra Boniche, Guadalupe Nunez, and Israel Delgado to fix 20 sewing machines and donate two additional sewing machines and one mixer for the bakery class. These new additions will help the Learning Center grow and prosper for years to come
