May's
Member Spotlight
The Alpers, Gordon & Sharon have been Snowcreek Athletic Club members since the very beginning, when the Racquetball Club opened in the early 80s. They moved to Mammoth 35+ years ago from the LA area because of their love for the mountains and to open their business, Country Glass, which serves the contractors and businesses in and around Mammoth Lakes.
When The Club opened, The Alpers quickly found that it fit a need in the community, as it was the only indoor place to spend time in on cold winter nights that wasn't a restaurant or bar. Gordon quickly became a racquetball enthusiast, playing 5 days a week and Sharon took high-intensity Aerobics classes and worked out on the gym equipment. These days, you can still see Gordon & Sharon at the gym regularly, as they motivate each other to keep up their fitness routines. Some might say there's even a bit of rivalry when 1 or the other isn't as motivated on a particular day. They could not dream of being one-upped by the other. Sharon loves her spin classes and cardio equipment. Gordon doesn't run around swatting at the blue rubber ball as much or swimming 1+ miles each day in the lap pool these days. He's more apt to be seen in the weight rooms and working out on the cardio equipment.
Snowcreek Athletic Club has become a part of their lifestyle. It not only maintains their physical health, but allows them to destress from work demands and fulfills their social needs.
The Alpers wants Snowcreek to know how appreciative they are of the Service Desk staff and Spin Instructors, who make them feel welcome with their smiles and sincerity when it has been noticed that they have been away from the gym.
Now that you know a bit more about Gordon & Sharon Alpers, feel free to introduce yourself, as every member is a vital component of this great Snowcreek community.

Superfoods
1. Kiwi Fruit: Packs more skin-brightening Vitamin C than an orange. It helps you get 94% of your daily quota. Unlike most fruit, Kiwi provides some Vitamin E to fend off free radicals and keep skin smooth. People who ate kiwis 2x/day for 28 days were less prone to blood clots & lowered their blood triglicerides by 15%, according to a study from The University of Oslo. You can eat the outside of a raw kiwi for it's filling fiber.
2. Almonds: According to a study from Loma Linda University, Dieters who ate almonds daily shed 62% more weight and 56% more fat than those who didn't. "The fiber in nuts may prevent your body from absorbing some fat, speeding weight loss," says lead author Michelle Wien, R.D. Almond eaters also lowered their blood pressure & the Vitamin E in these nuts may keep skin supple. Chomp ofn 1 & 1/2 ounces (about 35) raw or roasted almonds daily.
3. Wild Salmon:
The fish's omega-3 fatty acids could help you fight flab more effectively. They alter the expression of certain genes, shifting your body to burn fat rather than store it. In a study analyzing the diets of 35, 000 women, published in Public Health Nutrition, those subjects who ate oily fish such as salmon 2-4x/week had the lowest basal metabolic indexes, a common measure of body fat.
4. Brussel Sprouts: The vegetable you hated as a kid could help restore your youthful glow. Sprouts contain Vitamin A to keep your immune system healthy and Vitamin C to aid collage building and fight wrinkles. Plus, they offer a phytonutrient that can clear away carcinogenic substances in the body, says Keri Gans, R.D., spokeswoman for ADA. Cook sprouts briefly & add olive oil. The combination will provide your body with more nutrients.
5. Yogurt: Lowfat & Nonfat Greek and regular yogurts contain 20% or more of your daily calcium needs. The mineral slows production of cortisol, a hormone that encourages belly-flab buildup. People on a low-cal diet that included yogurt lost 81% more belly fat than those on a similar but no yogurt plan, a study from The University of Tennessee concludes. This dairy is a must-do.
6. Eggs: The breakfast staple is loaded with choline, a compound known to help block fat absorption. After 8 weeks, dieters who ate 2 eggs, toast and jelly for breakfast 5 days/week lost 65% more weight than those who had a same-calorie bagel breakfast without eggs, according to a study in the International Journal of Obesity.
7. Olive Oil: Healthful monounsaturated fats founds in olive oil could potentially switch on genes related to fat burning & storage. Dieters on a low-cal plan emphasizing monounsaturated fats, protein & complex carbs lost almost double the weight that dieters who ate the same calories but less total fat & protein & more carbs lost, a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine reveals.
8. Legumes:
Rich in resistant starch (RS), a carbohydrate that may encourage fat burning & shrink fat cells. University of Colorado study participants ate a meal with 5 g of RS-about what you get from 3/4 cup cooked lentils & then burned 23% more fat over 24 hrs. than when they had a meal without the starch.
9. Cabbage:
Women who ate more than 3 3/4 cup servings of cabbage weekly slashed their breast cancer risk by 50-70%, according to a study out of Michigan State University. Cabbage has phytochemicals that may ward off the disease. It may lower your cholesterol nearly as much as oat bran, according to a study in Nutrition Research. Steaming enhances cabbage's cholesterol-lowering ability. To fight disease, serve slaw or a salad, since phytochemicals form only after vigorous cutting or chewing.
10. Quinoa:
A complete protein, quinoa has all the essential amino acids needed to build metabolism-revving muscle. Reduced-calorie dieters eating about 115g of protein daily lost 22% more fat after 4 months than those who ate 70g per day, according to The Journal of Nutrition.
