When Joel Schwartzman was selected by Mayor Michael Dachisen to fill out the late James Dunn's term on the Rockaway Township Library's Board of Trustees, he needed no introduction to the staff. His face is as familiar as his stature: he is a library "regular."
Joel's history with the Rockaway Township Library began back in the early 70's, when the Hibernia Library first opened. When his son Steven came along, he was taken to the library on a regular basis.
Being a member of the Lions, Joel was asked by then-library director Jeanette Cohn to hang a plaque announcing that the Large Print Collection is totally funded by the Lions Club of the Rockaways.
Joel's first wife had a collection of over 100 Star Wars books which were donated and displayed. Joel has shared his love of needlepoint with us through a display of the pillows he has hand-crafted (he says he finds this hobby relaxing.)
However, Joel said, his first Rockaway Township-Library connection came years before that. As a boy, he went to the Brooklyn Public Library, where Rose Tallus, a resident of Rockaway Township, was a librarian. What a coincidence!
Joel and his second wife, Randy, live in White Meadow Lake. He is semi-retired and works as a Quality Control Engineer and a Research Chemist, when he isn't visiting the library.
Welcome, Joel!
