Changes in Weekend Hours and Closings

Due to budgetary constraints, the Rockaway Township Library will be closed on Sundays, beginning March 3, 2013 through Labor Day weekend.

The library will also close for two four-day unpaid furloughs of all staff. The first furlough will be Monday, March 25 through Thursday, March 28, 2013. The second furlough will be Tuesday, August 27 through Friday, August 30, 2013. Outdoor book return boxes will be locked for the duration of the furloughs.

Construction Updates for March

The Rockaway Township Free Public Library's Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) replacement project continues according to schedule.

The Main Level will remain closed to the public through April. The Lower Level is accessible through the side entrance. Visit the Meeting Room on the Lower Level for internet access, information and reference, copies, federal tax forms, magazines, DVDs, CDs, and new books and audiobooks. Patrons can still request materials for pickup in the Children's Room.

Rockaway Township Library patrons can use their library cards at 34 area libraries. A list of these locations is available at the library of at http://www.mainlib.org/locations.

Thank you for your continued patience as we work to provide a safe and comfortable environment for all of our library users. We look forward to returning to our normal schedule in 2013.

Welcome Library Trustee Joel Schwartzman

When Joel Schwartzman was selected by Mayor
Michael Dachisen to fill out the late James Dunn's term on the Rockaway Township Library's Board of Trustees, he needed no introduction to the staff. His face is as familiar as his stature: he is a library "regular."

Joel's history with the Rockaway Township Library began back in the early 70's, when the Hibernia Library first opened. When his son Steven came along, he was taken to the library on a regular basis.

Being a member of the Lions, Joel was asked by then-library director Jeanette Cohn to hang a plaque announcing that the Large Print Collection is totally funded by the Lions Club of the Rockaways.

Joel's first wife had a collection of over 100 Star Wars books which were donated and displayed. Joel has shared his love of needlepoint with us through a display of the pillows he has hand-crafted (he says he finds this hobby relaxing.)

However, Joel said, his first Rockaway Township-Library connection came years before that. As a boy, he went to the Brooklyn Public Library, where Rose Tallus, a resident of Rockaway Township, was a librarian. What a coincidence!

Joel and his second wife, Randy, live in White Meadow Lake. He is semi-retired and works as a Quality Control Engineer and a Research Chemist, when he isn't visiting the library.

Welcome, Joel!
