Peter has a problem: a new baby sister. How he comes to terms with that development is the premise for Ezra's gently humorous story, Peter's Chair.
Plus: Art chairs, craft chairs, and how pink and blue became baby colors.

Dear Friends,
Change is the theme of the new year, when we look forward to our post-holiday resolutions, a new school term and, yes, spring! For us, the new year really gears up in February, with the selection of EJK Book Award winners and the winning books in the EJK Bookmaking Competition. Stay tuned for more details.
Accepting change is the challenge in our featured book, Peter's Chair. It's about a boy learning to come to terms with having a baby sister - a common, yet life-altering, event. We have a new quote about the book, plus Book Activities and Teacher Features filled with resources. Please check them out.
Speaking of resources, we've culled a few from our website for Black History Month. You'll find a list books, with wonderful illustrations, that tell the stories of the Africans and African-Americans whose contributions and sacrifices helped shape our country; 10 of the best resources on the web for multicultural picture books; and our EJK Book Award winners (with a soon-to-be-announced update).
As February begins, it's worth mentioning that January's second annual Snowy Day Month ended on a high note, with increased public attention and sales. The enduring popularity of The Snowy Day also gives a boost to Ezra's other titles, which deserve a place on every parent's bookshelf.
Sincerely,
Associate Director
Ezra Jack Keats Foundation

It will be a snowy day at Macy's on February 8, as the Keats classic joins the retailer's Reading Circle at its Herald Square flagship store, and on February 22 at its downtown Brooklyn store.

Peter's Chair is a simple story about
complicated feelings, and this lesson
offers a range of complexity. An adjustable balance of discussion and fun makes a perfect
plan for kindergarten through third grade.

Check out the latest entry to our Gallery of Outstanding Minigrants. It's a school-wide
program based on Ezra's classic Peter's Chair that ended up in a museum show!
And don't forget: The deadline for 2014 Minigrant applications is March 15.
