Dear Friends,
We depend on the teachers in our public schools to inspire our children to love reading and writing, but we rarely get to see what they go through to get the job done! During this Snowy Day anniversary year, we have had the opportunity to glimpse the celebrations and projects teachers and librarians planned to bring special excitement to the simple act of reading a wonderful book.
But it was because of Superstorm Sandy that we learned a profound lesson about the distance teachers will go for their students. Two New York City teachers - one whose students were displaced from a damaged building, the other from a school that was destroyed by the storm - describe just some of the obstacles they overcame to remake their schools, literally overnight, in new locations, so their students could come together to rebuild their communities. Read their stories in our special Storm Report.
On a lighter note, don't miss the Internet gem on our "If You Loved The Snowy Day..." page. Made by 16-year-old filmmaker Caelan Barr when he was all of 11, his video stars his brother Michael, who plays Peter to a tee!
After such a tumultuous season, we hope that the new year is filled with human warmth, good cheer and good books! Happy holidays!
Sincerely,
Deborah Pope

* Uptown, by Bryan Collier. Harlem, as seen through the eyes of a little boy.
* Tía Isa Wants a Car, by Meg Medina; illustrated by Claudio Muñoz. Isa wants to buy a car, but money is tight, since it all goes into two piles: one to save and one for family members far away. * Ruby's Wish, by Shirin Yim Bridges; illustrated by Sophie Blackall. Ruby is determined to attend university, just like the boys. Based on the life of the author's grandmother.br> * Bird, by Zetta Elliott; illustrated by Shadra Strickland. Mekhi draws as a way to cope with his real-life troubles. In time, he finds his own "special somethin" - the healing power of putting pencil to paper.
* My Name Is Yoon, by Helen Recorvits; illustrated by Gabi Swiatkowska. Her name looks like dancing figures when Yoon writes it in Korean, but in English the lines stand all alone - just like the way she feels since moving to the U.S.
* The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats. It was this book that opened the door for children's book writers and illustrators to explore and celebrate heritage, diversity and a wealth of American stories that hadn't yet been seen in print. Fifty years on, this classic is a fresh yet timeless tribute to a child's spirit.

You've come up with a great program. The next step: keep the cost to $500. If you can't find a way to stick to that figure, you still have some time (the deadline is March 15) to reconsider the scope of your project. Here are some ideas to help keep expenses low and quality high.
Tip:
* Don't budget items that are not be covered by Minigrants: general operation and administration, transportation, salaries, and unrelated books or equipment. * Find out what parents or other volunteers can donate in terms of time, materials or services.
* Look for a simpler or less pricey way to achieve the results you want. Be creative: recycle, barter, buy on sale, repurpose, streamline.
We've seen some amazing programs created through Minigrants. Don't let your budget stand in your way! |
