The Trip cover

When his family moves to a new neighborhood, Louie has to leave his friends behind. Sad and lonely, Louie creates a city scene inside a shoebox. The tiny diorama has a magical effect, sending his imagination back to old friends and old times. Then the spell ends, and a real-life adventure begins as Louie joins new friends for Halloween night.

Bonus: Come fly with some of our favorite characters - can you guess who they are? Plus, model planes, dioramas and Halloween ideas that are spooky-fun!

The Countdown Begins!

The Snowy Day was published in November 1962, and all year we've been keeping tabs on the 50th anniversary celebrations. Ezra's classic has been commemorated in museums, bookstores and parks, among other locales. Check out our anniversary update - and if your school or library has a Keats event, why not share it with us?

Dear Friends,

Throughout this past year, we've been adding and improving features here and on our website. After a summer hiatus, we're back at it! Check out the new Educator's Corner: since we know busy teachers don't have a moment to spare, we want our website to be as useful as possible - and as interesting! - for educators looking to teach Keats.

Introducing Teacher Features, a bimonthly page with a lesson plan and more on a selected Keats book. The same story will be showcased across the site, in the popular feature "If You Love The Snowy Day..." and as a new game or animated story in
Fun & Games. Add
to this the wealth of material on our new Resources page, and that's a lot of ideas for teachers to choose from.

Also, educators, please take a look at our update of the The Snowy Day anniversary activities going on around the country. There's still time to let us know, and share, what's being done at your school or library to celebrate Keats!

Sincerely,

Margot Abel

Associate Director

* We are proud to announce our new video of the 2012 EJK Bookmaking Competition. Documenting the process from ideas through exhibition, this eight-minute presentation shows how the program works in New York City and why it can work in other cities. Contact us for more information.

* San Francisco, here we come! The Contemporary Jewish Museum and the San Francisco Unified School District have partnered with the EJK Foundation to take the Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Competition out west. The competition is open to all public school students, who can be inspired by "The Snowy Day and the Art of Ezra Jack Keats," at the museum from November 15 through February 24, 2013. Click here to learn more.

Changes are a-foot in Educator's Corner! We've called on teacher and consultant Gayle Bendeck to discover great lesson plans and classroom ideas to make teaching Keats more convenient than ever. Plus, all the tools and resources available on our site are being reorganized and expanded, so they're easier for busy teachers to find and use. Check back for new features - sometimes, change is good.

Educators, Mark your Calendar

The March 15 deadline may seem a long way off, but a winning Minigrant proposal takes planning. The best time to start the process is now.

Tip: As you consider what kind of project would most benefit
your students and community, check with your colleagues
to avoid competing applications; only one will be accepted
per organization.
