Auto enrolment - are you prepared?

Introduced several years ago, auto enrolment - the legal responsibility for employers to enrol their employees into qualifying workplace pension schemes - was treated by some as a far-away issue, as a six year staging window was granted with SMEs not needing to complete their schemes for several years.

However, the years have quickly gone by since the first enrolments in 2012, and this year the regulations will begin affecting the SME marketplace.

This will represent a significant change in administration and costs of staff: are you ready? Learn more about what you need to know here.

Diary of a Finance Director

The week of a portfolio finance director... an occasional series of diary entries from the EFM Associate Director network.

... business owners are often focused on the big picture and don't have the time and sometimes the expertise to review the minutia... Why should they - they have enough to do already!

EFM associates are finance directors and financial controllers who deliver financial expertise to several clients on a part-time, pay-as-you-use basis. Read the second in our diary series here.

EFM data suggests widespread VAT risk

Back in June, EFM released our VAT healthcheck designed to test a company's processes and knowledge in this tricky area.

Based on our interim results, 90% of those who took our healthcheck show signs of weakness within their VAT accounting processes and knowledge levels. Based on these results and the professional experience of our team of highly qualified finance directors, we suspect the problem is widespread across the SME environment.

Weakness in this area could lead to expensive mistakes, fines and penalties: find out more here.

SMEs rejected for loans to be referred
Banks have long been the traditional funding source for SMEs, but more and more often we hear of promising businesses being denied the resources they need for their ambitious growth programmes.

EFM are advocates of many alternative forms of funding, and new rules mean that banks who reject a loan to an SME will now have to refer the company to alternative sources. Read more here.
