Newsletter Changes
Starting in January, Catalina Hall will be taking over as editor of the newsletter. It will become a monthly publication for longer, thoughtful articles that are not time-sensitive. Short notices will be sent out in the weekly e-flash, and another weekly publication will feature reflections from the week's sermon. More details will follow.
Editing this newsletter, as I have done for the past six years, has been very enjoyable for me. But it's time to move on. Catalina and I have been working together on transition, and I know she will do a superb job.

Tax Notice
Tired of sending all your taxes to our alleged legislature for distribution? Boy, do we have a deal for you! Since 2008, members of the Congregation have joined together to direct almost 24,000 dollars of their Arizona Schools Tax Credit contributions to Davis and Laguna Elementary Schools in the Flowing Wells School District. These funds are used for extracurricular purposes such as field trips, including to the Grand Canyon, music, and other activities. These opportunities for these children would not be available absent these tax credit contributions.
Your contribution of up to $ 400 per couple, $ 200 per individual, generates a tax credit to be applied to your AZ 2013 taxes. The district will mail you a confirmation to use for tax purposes. This is a credit, not a deduction. Please give your checks, payable to Flowing Wells School District to Steve Weatherspoon at the 12/15/13 service or call Steve at 624-3234 to make other arrangements. This program is truly a tangible GOOD. I urge your participation. Thank you. SW

Café Justo
It's time to again treat yourself a few pounds of Café Justo-The Coffee for Social Justice and Ethical Drinking, Too!
The "Coffee Mission" is a Social Action/Justice project that supports a small co-op of Mexican coffee growers and roasters. Through your support and that of many other congregations, these folks are now earning a livable wage from Café Justo. This coffee is fair traded plus shade and organically grown. To learn more about Café Justo and view what's available, go to http://justcoffee.org and "meet" the coop members.
You may order regular, decaffeinated or a mixture; beans or ground. The coffee comes in dated, sealed 1-pound bags. Regular costs $9; decaffeinated and 50/50 blends cost $10. Mountain Vista UU does earn a few cents per pound sold.
To put yourself on the monthly "coffee order alert" list or to gather more info, Contact Elizabeth Reed at 520-269-3414 or reedeliz@gmail.com. Once you order, you will be contacted each month for your next order.

A Spaghetti Western
Service Auction January 10
The Service Auction is the major fundraiser for MVUU and we count on your participation to make it a success!
Make your appearance Bring out your inner cowboy or cowgirl and dress the part! Hats will be available for purchase at the Auction.
Make your reservations We are now taking reservations for the auction evening, A Fistful of Dollars. Since a dinner will be served, we need to order the right amount of food from Rosati's. Thus we need to know your plans. The $15 ticket for the auction will be included in your bill at the end of the evening.
Make your donation Only one week remains for donations to be submitted. Stop by the Auction Table after the Service if you need ideas.
Think about giving a dinner or a party? It doesn't have to be fancy. How about a Scrabble tournament, a Texas hold'em or Bunko party, a chili cook-off, a wine tasting, or a high tea?
How about offering house or pet or plant sitting? Or cleaning a garage, or tutoring, or a vegan cooking class?
Childcare? Free childcare will be provided for those who reserve it at the Auction Table.
Contact Anne Tatum (742-4007) ahtatum@mindspring.com, or Michelle Vedus-Deeney (638-7516) mvedusdeeney@comcast.net, if you have questions or want a donation form sent by email. They will gladly help with ideas for donations.
Happy Trails!

Weekly Activities
Sunday Morning Book Group, 8:30
Our new book is 1493 by Charles C. Mann. This is the story of what happened after Columbus appeared in the Americas. Mann has written nothing less than the story of how a planet of what were once several autonomous continents is quickly becoming a single, "globalized" entity. It is a long book. We have begun discussing it on December 15 and will continue chapter by chapter until February 16. History buffs, here's your chance to join us. Sundays at 8:30 am in the small RE room. For more information contact John Clark at alvinjclark@aol.com.

Liturgical Theme for December: GIFTS
Sunday, December 15
"Winterfest: Reflections on the Solstice"
Rev. Ron Phares and the R.E. Students
Through dramatization and homily, we will reflect on the power of the cycling light and seasons, what they meant to our ancestors and what they mean to ourselves.
Sunday, December 22
"The Gift of Peace"
Rev. Ron Phares
The holiday season nears its frenetic climax. For some that means revelry and work and dizzying schedule. For some it only highlights their loneliness. It is an intense time. This service will create some space in the midst of that intensity to recover, to breathe, to unwind and to welcome what is.
This will be the last water ceremony of the church year. If you are a returning snowbird or simply have not had the opportunity to add your water to our shared waters, please bring your water and the meaning of that experience with you.
Tuesday, December 24
Christmas Eve Service
Rev. Ron Phares
Come celebrate peace. Come sing the old songs. Come brighten the darkness with your light and warm the winter with our good fellowship.
Sunday, December 29
"The Sanctity of Material Things"
Margaret Fleming
We've all been taught that spirituality is good and materialism is bad. But it isn't quite that simple. Let's explore what it is that sanctifies material things and how they can be used or abused.
