Great MVUU Green News!
At our March, 2013 Green Sanctuary meeting, attended by representatives of each committee, we agreed we would all work to reduce our paper usage. Paper production and disposal have significant environmental impacts, including being the most resource-intensive and highly-polluting of all manufacturing industries.
According to the EPA, the paper industry is the largest user per ton of product of industrial process water; it's the third largest industrial consumer of energy according to the DOE; it ranks 4th among industries in emissions of toxic chemicals into water and 3rd into the air; and in 2008 was the largest portion (34%) of municipal waste.
Well, we did it! Thanks to efforts by each committee, we reduced our paper consumption by 1/3-- from 4,500 sheets a month to 3,000. Read the report below to see what each committee did to accomplish this.
What a great group effort! Thanks to everyone!
Jan Anderson, MVUU Green Sanctuary Coordinator
